Get back "New" menu on Today screen?

axim x51v... dont like the softkeys. takes too long to create a new note, for example. liked wm2003's "New" Menu at the bottom of the today screen.

what is the hack to get that back?

There's an app called Saman WM5NewMenu which does what you want. I think I came across it on this site: if you search using that name you should find it.

I'm using IE on my laptop, have noticed these for some time now, presumed they were just advertising. Anyway, not spyware IMHO.

It's advertising. It's called IntelliText, and they market to several online sites as "unobtrusive" advertising. It beats pop-up ads anyway. And you can filter it out if you know what you're doing. It's just that doing so may reduce Aximsite's financial support.
