The new improved ROM for WM5 x50v can be found here. And yes, you need to have WM5 A01 preinstalled. Please don't use this guide unless the new ROM does not fix your problem. Thanks.

This guide is designed to help people who are VERY frustrated with WM5 upgrade. However, I can't guarantee that it will work for sure. This guide is based on my experience with Dell US and I hope someone can refine it later on. THIS GUIDE IS FOR REFRENCE PURPOSE ONLY!
Also, we're not cheating dell by doing this. Under warranty terms, Dell HAS to replace it with a comparable product if they are unable to solve the issue. In this case, they falsely advertised x50/x50v's ability to upgrade to WM5. They did admit that WM5 is not compatible with x50 series when I asked them recently. According to their original information, though, x50v should be able to run WM5 smoothly.
Anyway, there are many ways to obtain the replacement, as you can see in the poll. Currently, the easiest way, according to the poll, is to use Dell's online hardware support chat. You'll need your service tag (below the axim's battery). The support agents might ask for your order number or customer number as well. You do need to provide your personal information (address, phone, etc. ) for verification purposes.
After all that stuff, you can now complain about all the problems you are having with WM5 on your x50v. Go ahead and make a LONG list. Remember to express your frustration clearly and POLITELY. Then, you can demand a x51v replacement. If they tell you to revert back to 2003 SE, you can use the argument I presented in the beginning of this post. However, DON'T mention anything regarding third-party software. Here are some more ideas:
I want to request a replacement unit that will be able to run
Windows Mobile 5 correctly. The initial product information did state
that x50v can run WIndows Mobile 5 without problems, but this is completely
false. Under the warranty terms, it's stated that Dell will replace a
defective product (in this case, hardware problem with ALL x50v models
that prevent it from running WM 5.0 correctly) with a comparable
product.
If there is any other ways to solve the compatibility issue regarding
Windows Mobile 5 and x50v, I will be glad to consider it.
If the agent still said that this can't be done, ask he/she to let you consult with the manager of the floor. Be patient. Also, you may need to go through several agents. If it still doesn't work, you can try other ways stated below.
You can get to higher support with a case number from lower support (preferbly online chat, don't call) or submit a "escalation request" through them.
a
-Just complain about ALL WM5 problems FORCEFULLY to the agents until they give you a case number. Then, you can directly ask them to submit a "escalation request" and a higher agent will call your house a couple days later. Tell the agent about your frustration with WM5 POLITELY and you can ask for x51v replacement directly afterwards.
-If you don't want to wait for the call, you can also try to ask for x51v with your case number through email:
- You can submit something like this: I've discussed my issue with Windows Mobile 5 with many support agents
and none can solve the compatibility issue with it running on x50v.

or
I've been having a lot of issues with my x50v. One the support agents
promised to replace it with x51v if the Windows Mobile 5 issue is not
resolved by April. I'm very frustrated with x50v and the support for the
Windows Mobile 5 OS. thanks.
You might need to try several agents to get x51v... Good luck!! I will be a painful process, but you should be able to get x51v in the end if you're persistent. DON'T GIVE UP EASILY!!!
I hope this guide will help you. Feel free to ask any question. Please vote to reflect your result.
Update 2: There seems to be a lot of concerns regarding whether the replacement is refurbished or new. Most of time, dell replaces defected unit with a refurbished one, as stated in their warranty terms. Though, you don't need to worry. Refurbished axims, unlike other dell products, are always like new. Besides, if there is any problem with refurbished unit, you can always request another replacement. Please refer to this thread for more information about this topic.
Update 3: I added a poll to the thread to determine the best method. I hope this will help!
Update 4: Most people seem to be more successful when they stated that they need x51v for business purposes. ;)
Update 5: Don't forget to ask for x51/x51v companion CD! (that is if you want GeoRally and ToyGolf)

I did something very similar and feel perfectly justified about it as I did pay for the 3 year warranties and Dell has the obligation to honor those. I did this about 5 months ago - thanks for posting this for people still suffering needlessly :)
Do I really want to do this? The X51V doesn't run WM2003, so if my replacement doesn't run well (as seems to be the case with WM5), then I don't have the option to revert.
Well, we shall see....I got my case number and escalation yesterday. Honestly, I truly did want WM5 when I bought my x50v, and was extremely disappointed in the end result. I lasted 2 weeks before reverting. I do believe that we were all misled and that Dell should make this good.

You won't be disappointed. I was totally amazed by the speed and stability of x51v compare to wm5 x50v when I got it. Many users, including me, are very happy with the device right now. Though, if you don't like x51v, I suppose you can always tell dell to downgrade you back to x50v
For those of you who tried, can you guys please post back? I'm quite eager to know how it went and I'm sure it will also help other people. It will also help to refine the guide. Thanks.
After knowing/reading about how many people are reluctant to be "stucked" with WM5, I just want to let you guys know that x51v with Wm5 feels at least 10 times faster than WM5 x50v. Also, if you don't like x51v, I suppose you can always persuade Dell to "downgrade" you back to the x50v. My device is pretty stable and fast so far. i don't have any bugs either now except a few crashes due to third-party software.

I just wanted to add my own saga from the weekend. I have an x50v that supposedly got a "Burnt" ROM from the WM5 upgrade. I am out of warranty, however, and had to fight my way through 8 different places in Dell support before someone could give me a straight answer.
For those of you in my boat that are out of warranty and need to upgrade (Dell only offers a refurbished replacement of the x50v, not an upgrade) I was given the factory direct website address for ordering.
i'm out of warranty too...but what if i complain that i didn't know because i got the wm5 upgrade after my warranty was out?
dangit, and my warranty was only out last month too
I thought you can extend your warranty?

Got my replacement today (x50v ->x51v). I didn't sent email them. I just did
phone call to Canada support . It took about 4 hr. to explain them (7 persons one by one) what I got and what for I paid. So, I'm very happy with new item.It is not
refarbished, it is brand-new. Rom is A06. It working very fast, i didn't sent my old one yet , so I can see both side by side X50v WM5 and new X51v. Big difference.
Just FYI --- this didn't work for me. I tried to get upgraded (not as a result of this post, just wanted the stability)

I have repeatedly spoken with (overseas) support and with this recent case number US Support and have not been able to reach a satisfactory conclusion, and in most cases I have been referred to a support forum (aximsite) and also been told to simply re-install Windows Mobile 2003se on the device.
My request is fairly simple. I would like to request this x50v to replaced with an x51v. I have 600+ days remaining on my Complete Care warranty, and honestly I would prefer to not continue to have these issues for the next 2 years. Windows Mobile 5 offers persistent storage and the main reason I wanted WM5 to begin with. Rolling back to WM2003se while an option, does not permit this option ... thereby leaving my data vulnerable to loss.
Thank You

Hello,
Your issue has been escalated up to me. I work in Dell's Resolution Center at our corporate headquarters. We cannot upgrade your Axim to an x51 version. The x50 and x50 have equivalent processor and memory speeds, and the x51 would not handle WM5 any differently than the x50. And we cannot control the coding of Windows Mobile 5 to adjust how it performs. There may be future ROM updates available for the x50, but when and if there are I do not know at this point.
Rolling back to Windows Mobile 2003 may be the only option available to you. I know it does not have the option for the persistent storage, and you may need to be aware to sync the data up with your system on a more regular basis.
If you have any additional questions I will keep this case open for two additional business days. If not, I will archive this case at this time.
Thank you,

As I said before , you might need to try several agents before you find one that's willing to help you. Also, did you try the phone?

Nice guide. Thanks. And for any naysayers -- this is a COMPLETELY justified set of actions. Dell cheated a lot of X50v users and every user deserves a replacement.

The only thing stopping me from moving onto WM5 is the fact that some of my programs (medical) only run on WM2003 and below.

Just a warning to all; this is a HIGHLY subjective claim (hence the word "feel"). This is in no way means the X51v is 10 tens faster.
