Aximsitebluetoothicon Bluetooth ActiveSync Problem

I'm stumped - I've had my x51v for a week and just now attempting to sync via bluetooth. XP on my laptop has assigned COM5 to ActiveSync in Bluetooth Places and the Axim only lets me choose between COM7 and COM8...

I've previously sync'd using the cradle, but I'd rather use bluetooth if possible.

thx,
Patrick

I have a new Inspiron 1705 and a new X51v and I thought it would be really cool to do ActiveSynch with the laptop with bluetooth so I could leave the cradle attached to my desktop computer.

After several attempts, I called tech support for Axim. After holding for the usual 45 minutes, I discussed my problems with them, and they walked me through a few things that didn't work. They said I needed to talk to the Inspiron tech support rather than Axim. By then, it was so late, I called the next day to Inspiron tech support and after the 45 min hold, two disconnects (they did call me back to my surprise--a real first) and walking through all their suggestions to no avail, they said this was really a wireless problem and I should talk to them.

They held on the line until I was connected and I started over again with "wireless" support. But wait...they said I should talk to Axim since this was ActiveSynch. I explained I'd already been there and that's how I ended up with wireless. They said I should talk to paid support because they didn't know anything about Bluetooth and it was really a third-party issue.

I said I didn't want to talk to paid support because I'd just bought all the stuff and thought setting it up wouldn't be out of the realm of regular tech support. Finally I ended up with a tech supervisor who just kept repeating the same thing over and over--it was a software issue (HUH?) and I needed to either pay for Dell support or get in touch with the software vendor. Well, what software vendor?

I'm going to try going through the bluetooth manual again and seeing if I can resolve this. One thing for sure...I'm not getting any help from Dell. None of them seem to know anythign about it.

Well damn... That's real encouraging. I finally managed to get ActiveSync moved over to COM7 on the laptop, but still can't connect.

Please post if you come up with something Akitalady!

Right after that last post, I fixed my problem.:) I had set up the Axim for connection to my laptop as a serial port. I deleted that and hit "Refresh" and it came back with the ActiveSync service. I checked that and went back to ActiveSync on the Axim and touched Connect via Bluetooth - it Sync'd right away.

I'm not completely sure how I got here, but I'd suggest the following:
  1. Sync with USB
  2. Start BT on Axim and make discoverable
  3. Start BT Wizard on laptop and search for devices
  4. Be sure that ActiveSync shows as a service
  5. In Axim, go to ActiveSync, Menu and Connect via Bluetooth
  6. You will probably get an error about connections - select establish a connection
  7. In Devices, select your laptop and click refresh
  8. ActiveSync should show as a service - tick it on and click Connect
  9. Go back to ActiveSync and try Connect via Bluetooth again

I prob'ly missed a step, but as best I can recall, that's how I got it to work. My laptop is a Dell Latitude D600 w/o factory BT using a Billionton CF BT card in a PCMCIA adaptor.

HTH,
Patrick

One of the issues I have run into with Bluetooth is that the setup on my D800 uses a 3rd party configuration instead of the Microsoft version. Not sure why it is like this.

I have the same problem, I can't seem to get the serial ports to match between the Axim and laptop. I have tried all sort of combinations without any luck. Apparently there is no "pairing". Bluetooth works fine with my GPS but that is all although I did manage to stuff that up and had to delete everything (in my connections) to make it work again. I am pretty sure there is something basic we are missing as most people seem to be able to sync via Bluetooth without any problems.

actually ... you should want the third party's version that came with your BT dongle instead of the default Widows generic version !

much more options available & compatibility issue ...

that is a great tutorial ... but that is for the fact that you have already installed the correct drivers ( the one that came with your dongle ..etc)

the default generic XP BT drivers sucks !! :)

Well I have spent 2 hours trying to set up sync via Bluetooth. I feel like I'm going around in circles. I have my Dell D800 and my X51v paired. In My Bluetooth Places it shows MyActiveSync (COM7). If I use the Bluetooth Wizard it comes up with ActiveSync as an available service. When I click on configure it shows that it is on COM 7. Under Partnership Settings on my Axim I highlight my computer name and click refresh. The bluetooth icons on both devices turn green and I hear a sound from my PC showing they are connected. But after it finishes the only services that ever show up are Serial Port and Dialup Networking. Under COM Ports on my Axim I have tried Outgoing Port (COM7) and Incoming Port (COM7). I have even tried no COM port setup. Of course when I click on Connect via Bluetooth it says it cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership....etc. Don't know what else to do.

on your desktop/laptop system ... rename that "Serial port" to "ActiveSync" ... and make a note of the COM port that the connection is using)

on desktop/laptop 's ActiveSync menu ... go into "FILE -->> connection settings
...and place a checkmark in the box that read "allow connection to one of the following"
--->>choose the COM port you had make note of previously .

now..on the axim ... start up BT ( make sure both box are checked .. turn on & make discoverable) ...

start activesync on the Axim through one of the menu ( either home or connections) ...and from Axim's activesync menu ... select " connect VIA bluetooth "

things should be up and running now ... it is only the "renaming the connection" that you need to do :)

no need to mess around with the outgoing/incomming port menu thing !!!

goodluck !

Kazkin,

My Dell D800 came with Bluetooth installed. It is the Dell TrueMobile Bluetooth module manufactured by Cambridge Silicon Radio. The software is simply called Dell Bluetooth Software. Do you know if anyone has done a tutorial on this configuration?

have you atleast try the renaming as suggested ??

I and a few others have ran into similar problem like your ( a service simply changed to serial ) ... all we did was renamed the serial service to activesync and followed through with a few other steps ( like I've mentioned above) ... and we are up and running with BT acticesync :)

and no ... I don't know any tutorials specifically to your setup ... sorry .. :)

Well I don't know exactly what I did but it finally worked! I did something in my Axim that caused my PC to give me a message saying that the Axim was asking for permission to access a service. Hadn't seen that before. Boom! it started working! And yes I had already tried the renaming thing. Thanks for your help.
