Full Backup

Is there any good reason why to look for any backup software for my Axim beyond the bundeled "SD Backup"?

Based on first hand experience, it worked perfectly when my battery went dead and I had to restart all over again.

I use the default "Back up all data" and as I said it lived up to my expectations.

Yes, good question. I was wondering why anyone would need backup software.

Just out of interest - why did you need to restore from a backup? WM5 stores all your data in ROM or on your memory card and these dont need power to support them so if your Axim ran out of power it shouldnt matter, surely you just need to charge it up and away you go?

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Ian

Third party backup utilities offer more features, such as scheduled backups and self-executing restore files. What the restore files allow you to do is restore without ActiveSync or any connection to the PC. Just tap on the file to execute it, and it restores everything for you in a few minutes. Great when you are away travelling, or just away from a PC.

Although WM5 has persistent storage, that doesn't mean you will never have an unexpected hard reset from software conflicts. If you want to avoid losing data/reinstalling programs, you still need a backup.

Well, the only thing you are missing is that I am not (YET) using WM5...

I had to restore data because of a drained out battery.

Honestly ... if the built in backup does what YOU need it to, there's no reason for YOU to look for a backup solution since you've already found what works for you.

On the other hand, for many people the built in solution either does not work as they would like it to, or they have slightly different needs that prompt the desire to have a backup solution.

There's some good reading to be found but THIS is a decent run through of why ... and HERE are some excellent reviews (and reasons for backing up as well)

Sprite Backup

I use Sprite backup because, God forbid, if my battery did drain while I was away from my PC (I have an x50v) and I lost everything then the only thing I would have to do is use the executable that my nightly backup from Sprite runs and it will restore everything as if nothing happened (once it was recharged.)

I think people were having to hard reset so often in the beginning that the backup solutions made it easier than re-installing from scratch (u'd back up a known good configuration and experiment from there.)

I haven't used a backup in awhile since my x50v has been stable for awhile but its good to know that it is there.

I sleep better every night knowing that there is a backup of my Ax in case anything goes wrong and the backup is made by a proper reliable backup program. I've rather pay a bit to get a proper backup program that works every single time than losing all my data.

And as tlmeekins, I can play around with my settings and play around with new programs. If anything screws up, I'll know that I have a base to fall back on and not having to reinstall everything all over again.
