Recieved one day! Returned the Next! My X51V tale!

Greetings,

Lets see, how do I start this... a bit of background.

Saw a Dell Axim X51v on the "Shopping Channel" here in Canada, Ontario specifically.

I saw, 399$ (Canadian)+tax which was 458.85$, which is effectively 410.420 USD.

This was a great deal, considering www.dell.ca was asking 529$! + tax which is near 600$.

I order it, and recieved it about 21 days later, turns out UPS didn't leave notice that they came to my house, so I found out a week later after they decided to call me, before they sent it back.

I get it, turn it on. It boots up. Runnin' a bit sluggish. I figured, that was just because it was doing initial setup etc, so I let it go.

I do the setup, its still running sluggish. I go to setting, and set MAX PERFORMANCE, and it was @ 624mhz.

I run it for 7 hours, running slow as hell. I have a friend who has a x50v and it owned this thing.

I tried again the next day, after finally getting the WIFI to run properly and for it to connect to my Linksys wrt54g router, which was 5 feet from it, it was functioning properly, but still slow as heck.

Example of this horrible performance, I would tap the Start button, and 4-5 seconds would pass, then it would react.

I did a hard reboot, soft, nothing helped. I have returned it. I do not like what I saw. I bought the newest version of the best model, and my friends discontinued model outperformed and outclassed it.

Not sure what was wrong, but I was not willing to pay to find out.

Really sad.

There are lots of issues with WM5 on the Axims currently. The 51's have fewer issues than upgraded 50's, but there still are issues. It doesn't suprise me at all that the x50v, presumably running WM 2003 SE, ran quicker.

Discontinued does not mean inferior, and the hardware between the two is just some additional ROM memory if I remember right. I work at CompUSA, we discontinue many products that get replaced by inferior versions. New =/= better!

I sure wished more people would think this way. :)

Sorry you had a bad experience! My x51v flies. You must have got some bad hardware, or the rom onboard had some bad software. Wonder if doing a rom update would have helped? In any case, good luck on your next PDA.

i have both the x50v and the x51v. My x51v is slower than sluggish and although it detects wireless signals, it remains in limbo at the connecting stage. The x50v, meanwhile, is emailing and surfing away, and if it could, would be sticking its tongue out at the x51v.

The speed difference can be RAM vs ROM. The X51V stores all applications and data in ROM. This makes accessing them slower but secure. Secure is having no power to your unit and yet the applications and data (user and OS supplied) are still there. Another reason for speed difference couuld be your friends X50 was set up properly and your X51V was not (due to not being framilure with Moble 5). Another reason could be not upgrding to ROM version A06 and applying the 'Fake Server Trick' listed as a sticky note on this site.

I for one any very satisfied with the performance of my X51V. I did the ROM upgrade in January along with applying the Fake Server Trick and my unit has had zero issues since that time.

It's not just the axims that have issue's with WM5 the ipaq 4700 has some pretty serious speed issue's with it as well. Which leads one to point the finger at WM5 and not the units themself. I purchesed WM5 for my X50v and have since had a full refund and the P&P returned to me.

a program like the vBar that allows you to really close the program (not just minimize it) can free up the RAM and speed up the x51v. That's what I did first thing when mine came in the mail and the axim really flies.

Opening too many programs (and not closing any) eats up a lot of system resourses and slow down your axim.

Hello,
Can any one here tell me what a rom update is and how I can do such a thing.
I just got my dell axim x51v a few week ago and saw that it has A01 rom.
Please email me the information at quy000001@gmail.com,
Thank you.

go to dell.com and update it, if it is still sluggish, then it is hardware, exchange immediately,

get your service tag number ready for faster searching on the update

One thing that people neglect to think about is the stages of WM5. WM5 (unlike 2003) is using a new type of memory usage (Archiving in ROM vs RAM).

I personal LOVE this feature. When i had my Toshiba e740... no power or if your battery died while away from charging for an extented time... bam... lost EVERYTHING. NOW that sucks!

2003 SE is the final version in which windows ran from RAM. So of course it was golden. 2003 was an upgrade to 2002, and 2003SE is an upgrade from 2003.

WM5 is totally new, and does have a few bugs (like Activesync trying to sync every 2 minutes... which is where the fake server trick comes into play).

And like previously said, its not the Axim. Its the Windows. Trust me... it'll get better. Once you put the effort and time into the thing like we all do when we get new toys, you woulda found that out. I think your decision was a tad hasty and posting here on the forums BEFORE sending it back would have changed your mind.

Also when you order off the "Home Shopping Network" your not gonna get the most updated Axim either. Mine is updated, has the fix and runs great!

BTW you could order directly from Dell for $350 US with an extra battery, Aluminum case, and extras. My friend just bought one yesterday.

Mine flew too when I first got it but it is slightly slower now that I have all my programs installed and I must say, I have quite a bit of programs.
