Worried Lots of x51v related questions from a newbie

Hello community,

I'm new to handhelds and after alot of consideration I decided to get myself a Dell Axim x51v (over HP hx4700 and FSC n560). I want to run 3D-Applications on it, which was the reason I finally chose the x51v - even though the battery lifetime is disappointing. This is where my questions come up:

1) Whats the battery lifetime of the 1100 mAh one if I'd be running a 3D all the time?

2) Does anyone have a picture of a x51v with the 2200 mAh battery pack mounted? I'd like to see how big the device would be.

3) What CF GPS reciever has a good performance and is compatible with the x51v? Unfortunately most shops don't seem to provide compatibility lists. :/

4) Is there a CF or SD Camera for the x51v available? I'd need at least a 1.3 meg resolution.

5) Are there different/various releases of the x51v or a batch I should look out for? Certain series numbers that have some bugs fixes or something like that?

I'd be happy about any answered question. Thanks in advance,

gabb :)

Hi,

thanks for the reply. I might have been a little bit too vague on things, so here are a few more details. I am planning on writing certain 3D applications for the x51v, so I'd need to know how good the performance really is and how much it affects the battery lifetime.

as for 2) - I'd love to see a picture, since I don't own a x51v yet I woudln't know what size the 1100 one has either
as for 4) - I need the PDA to process the image, so a phone with a camera won't help alot

An additional question came up meanwhile:
6) What is fast and decent memory (SD) in the 2GB area?

Greets,
gabb

If you haven't bought an Axim yet, you should check out this link:

The Asus Mypal that the guy has for sale has a 1.3 megapixel camera built in. Seems like a reasonable deal....

Cheers

Yea, the Asus wouldn't be a bad choice, except I really need the dedicated 16megs of graphic memory and the 3D controller thats inbuild in the Intel CPU for my applications.

Lol advertising in threads..

Anyway, I can answer only a few of the questions you asked. Hope it helps.

1) I don't think running "3D" would affect the battery life. It should still be the same.

2) This link has a picture of an Ax with a 1800mAh battery. The 2200mAh one should be slightly thicker. http://www.aximsite.com/articles/link.php?id=306

3) I think you should start a thread under the GPS section or have a look at that section of the forum.. Should be able to answer your question.

4) Yes there is, but as mitodna said, it is very costly. Might as well get a camera that uses either SD or CF and justs plug the memory card into your Ax after you take the picture. Better resolution too. I'm doing that at the moment.

5) If you're going to buy off Dell then I don't think there is anything to worry about. The latest released ROM is A06 but there are a few people on this website that has recieved Axes with A08. Just read around and upgrade it to the latest ROM when you recieve it.

6) Fast and decent SD card. Most SD cards are decent, but you might try brands like Sandisk, Kingston, A-Data(?), etc.

Oh and don't forget to apply the fake server patch when you recieve your Ax. It fixes most problems if you have not already read about it. Here's the link.

I think Dell do sell the SDIO camera, the 2200 battery would stick out about 7mm

My advice would to be to just get a compact point and shoot (such as the canon elph). Then take the SD card and stick it in your axim and voila.

Thanks for the replies - especially the pic ktvyeow posted, helped me alot and I actually might get the 1800mAh one - seems to be a good alternative.

As for the cam: I'm hoping to write a prototype software which should allow pattern recognition on images, thats why I want it for usability purposes to be a docked camera solution rather than asking the test users to make pictures and fiddle with the memory cards afterwards.

I'll google for the SDIO cam mitodna mentioned, maybe I can find it. Does anyone know if the HP PhotoCam would be compatible somehow?

Regards,
gabb
