I purchased my X51V in October last year. Until ROM update A06 and finding on this site the 'Fake Server Trick' it was a testing time with my X51V. Since doing these two things (four months ago) I have had zero issues with my unit. It is rock solid.
4. Problems with bluetooth and having to manually sync to server are not great. I'm quite enjoying the Axim--my first windows mobile device--after having it now since October of last year. I switch from a Sony Clie TH55. It took me a while to convert. If it weren't for aximsite, I would have hated the Axim and probably gone back to Palm. Thanks for all the advice that's been given!
Hmmm, the results of this poll are MUCH more positive than I would have thought from reading all the negative posts on this site. I supposed it's biased by the general unwillingness of people to admit mistakes. Some of the common issues that I see here are 1) Poor BT support, 2) Disappearing CF cards,3) Software incompatibilities.
For the record, I don't have a X51, so I didn't vote. My opinion is based on problems other owners have complained about on this site.
Given the growing pains I've had to put up with, I think my 4 was too generous for the x51v.
For Dell and Microsoft to ship such a buggy, feature incomplete and tempermental OS / hardware platform is just greedy.
Why did it take them THREE iterations to get the OS stable?
Why couldn't they fix the most basic issues such as disappearing flash cards and memory leaks?
Who was the idiot who decided that the sync method should be via a "Network" connection that would invariably run into firewall issues?
Mysteries indeed...
However, it still gets a 4 from me due to the price / performance aspect. This is the best PDA money can buy. Period. It is also the most versatile (except for the bluetooth stack) PDA to date, and would buy it again DESPITE the abnormally long "shake-down" time to get it operational.
It's PIM functionality, music, video and GPS capabilities are simply unparalleled. The only thing I wish it could do is double as a phone. There is a reason why HP is losing ground to Dell in the PDA sphere, and it's because of the Axim.
I WAS WRONG!
I have been bashing dell and microsoft for faulty products I have had dell send me 3 units and the last I sent back to dell because their policy is to send a refurbished unit after 21 days or so I did not want a refurbished unit that just so happened to do the same things.
I hard reset my unit one last time and this time I reloaded each program one at a time and played with it after installation (very timely) but it worked I chose not to load a bunch of backgrounds (very pretty) and a sound mixer and a couple of other programs that I won't mention due to uncertainty and bad publicity and eureka! my axim works like a charm and I am in love again.
I was in contact with a dell vp and I blasted him too but to one and all I am truely sorry but wm5 does have problems with a lot of programs so beware
Voted 4. If I didn't have to soft reset every day or so and the Bluetooth stack was flawless with my BT headset then I'd be happy to give it 4.9 (5 is too perfect for me)
I gave it a 5 because I love my AXIM. Instead of buying a GPS only I bought the X51V with GPS + software for the same price.
Aximsite is the reason why I gave it a 5 because if there is a problem, there is a solution in Aximsite.
I like WM5, I bought some programs and accessories but also installed a couple of programs for free. For example E-Sword with 2 complete Bibles!
I also create some programs on BASIC4PPC for my X51V.

There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view that I hold dear.
I wish I had known about Aximsite before I purchased mine...I never would have!
For Dell to put out such a piece crap and then on top of it to be totally unresponsive to address the valid issues that exists is totally irresponsible and shows the existing attitude that Dell has in "once you buy it it's yours"!
The supposed BT capability and the CF slot were two primary reasons I thought the X51v would be great for me. Whoa is me for not doing doing my due dilligence before purchasing! Now I have an expensive calendar and game playing device.
The biggest issue is Dell's attitude toward consumers! Sure problems arise with computer hardware/software...BUT FIX THE DAMN PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rated a 2 for the OS problems. For any newbie I would recommend investigating the PDA/phone hybrids, they seem to be where the innovations will be taking place. Plain PDA's will, IMHO, be phased out by the manufacturers. And look at it this way, they can push content/advertising to PDA-phones whereas our PDA's do not offer this revenue enhancing option.
First thing, I love my x51v, but it comes out of the box fundamentally flawed (in my case). I really don't think that I should be having to implement a 'trick' I.e fake server trick to avoid rapid battery discharge, cards going missing etc. Yes its an easy fix....but if its that easy why hasn't Dell and Microsoft sorted such major issues out before.
In a past life I was part of a Quality Management Group for one of the top 3 pc manufacturers in tge world and I can assure you laptop or pc units with similar generic issues would not have left the site if known about.
anway I go with a 4 although if Dell or microsoft were to use the statistics it would be much lower.
Thank god I found this site or I would have sent it back....but yes I do love it so lol.....

"I've done things that I am not proud of, and I have done things that I am proud of that were quite frankly disgusting"
I must say that I love my X51v. My previous PDA was one of the last Compaq branded IPAQ's, and while it was a solid device it did not hold a candle to my
X51v. The X51 is a tiny bit slower than my old Ipaq in terms of operating systems responsiveness, but I don't have to worry about loosing all my data, so the trade in memory was well worth the slight loss in operating system speed. It has a beautiful screen, not HP quality, but it is not a brick like the HP either
The secret of my enjoyment of this great tool has been this wonderful website. Through third party software that has been recommended or developed by users on this site I have been able to take my X51v from a great organizer to a just shy of a laptop replacement. I think Dell should put a link to Aximsite.com in the favorites menu on every new X51 they sell. :approve:
I'll give it 5 when the bluetooth works properly :)
Ever heard of the Widcomm hack? Get the install cab and see how you like your axim. I honestly love my Axim. It plays all my SNES roms, movies, GPS, internet, etc. Works great.
The only thing I want to do, which I can but I haven't got around to it, is setup an exchange server account with mail2web.com or through my work and sync up remotely to get my mail and such.
My axim is my iPod, PSP, GPS, TV, and SNES all rolled into one. Couldn't ask for a better all-around device.
