Clear up and start from scratch.

I've had my Axim for a month or so now and like any newbie I've put a lot of crap on and I've taken a lot of crap off. I've now got my SatNav sorted, only I'm finding the whole machine constantly freezing. If it were a PC I'd be tempted to start from scratch, reformat the HD and have a nice clean lean machine with just the things I want. Is it advisable provided I can back up essential stuff? Will it help ? or is this slowness and the need for soft resets the norm?
