Total Noob someone wave their wand and make my 51v efficient

Yes, I got the X51v for my 30th birthday (may 24th) and now I'm doing my research (and banging my head against the wall with the options)
I have loaded and unloaded software and can't decide which I like (haven't found any that jump out and say OMG I HAVE TO HAVE THIS) All I've seen are these really great screen shots of others PDAS and think I'd love to have that, but can't figure out what all I need to do in order to make mine like that.
Right now I'm demo'ing pocketbreeze and really don't see the hype :(

I loaded skype and I think that's a really cool toy (when Im in a hotspot)

As far as the really cool skins, I can't seem to find any that blow me away (with the exception of, again, the ones I see on the screen shots)

I've been through just about every tutorial and userguid on this site (or at least I think I have) but again, nothings really jumped out at me as being linear.

What I want to use my Axim for is appointments, finance, contacts, a little entertanment, storage of key files (resume, phone lists, documenation, several excel sheets) and then of course I want that "shock value" of Hey... look how sweet my device looks.

Am I asking for too much, or am I just totally overwhelmed... Unfortunately I'm on the forfront with the new handheld... all of my friends are using blackberries.. personally I think they're hideous :P

If anyone wants to jump in and say hello to the noob and throw out (probably for the umpteenth time on this forum) their ultimate PPC words of wisdom, I'd appreciate it... Until then I'll continue to surf around and check out everyones "my pda" until I figure out exactly what i want to do with this very expensive calculator ^_^

Hello, and welcome to the best Axim site on the planet!

Here's a short list that might or might not blow you away.
TodayScreen:

PB <---- 99.99% of the members here have it. Highly recommend of course.
Spb Diary <----- Same as PB - both are very good. I recommend this one too.
WA2 <----- 90% maybe :)
Pocket Plus / iLauncher <-- Does the same thing, its all about personal taste.

Appointment/calendar:

PI <---- a must.

Finance:

Spb finance
Money

Whats PB and WA2 ?

Your default install should have:
- a great video/music player: tcpmp
- a tool for mapping networkshares: bizzdev net use or tcmdpocket
- a navigation tool.. what's best for your country
- if you want (other) IM (then msn): agile messenger

Hey toyzruskid2000, to be honest you are asking the questions I would like to hear the answers for. Hopefully you will get a good response.

I found what I liked by loading all apps I thought may be cool, then finding out which ones I actually used and kept a note of those... then I did a hard reset and set my Axim up the way I wanted (bluetooth hacks, etc...) then installed only the software that I had noted during testing...

One that I like a LOT is Pocket Control... I can control the Axim from my laptop through a WiFi connection on my home network... It's great to be able to work on the Axim with a mouse and keyboard... :)

This is basically what I did. I've hard reset my axim so many times its not even funny ... but really its the only way to find the combination of applications that work for what you want your axim to do. There's so many applications (and many of them are terrible) that you need to weed through them to find out what really is what YOU want. Here's a good example what I mean --

Spb Pocket Plus, Resco Explorer & iLauncher are all very good applications. They all include a today plugin that allows you to create and launch shortcuts to applications on your today screen. Now, the problem was everything but iLauncher used the default application icons for the shortcuts. Most applications have some butt ugly icons ... iLauncher lets you use whatever icon you want. However that's really the only thing iLauncher is good for - launching things. Pocket Plus has a ton of other options as does Resco Explorer and neither of them is identical to what the other one offers... see where I'm going with this? You really have to figure out what you want. I personally hate half the options these applications have but they have 1 or 2 things I love ...

Ok ... if the wifi control thing isn't all that important - here's how you can save about $34.95 and still be able to control your x51v through your desktop/laptop.

What you're going to need:

ActiveSync

Remote Display Control Host

VGA BruteForce - either follow the information in this post or get Tweaks2k2 and apply the vga brute force in Tweaks2k2 to cerdisp.exe in your start menu.

Now when you connect run Remote Display it will be in VGA and you can control all aspects of your PPC from your desktop without spending $30+ dollars ... the only loss here is that you need to be physically connected to the PC for it to work unlike the suggested app which allows you to be wireless.

PS --- Tweaks2k2 --- This is not one of those personally find out if you like it kind of apps. This is one of those if you don't have it you're not using your PPC right. Tweaks2k2 is litterally the first thing that gets installed on my axim after a hard reset. Here's why:

1. Disables the "security" feature of WM5 that bugs you about your software
2. Change the system font (I just don't like tahoma)
3. WM5 optimized cache size
4. VGA Brute Force (I use it for Acrobat & Remote Display)
5. Change the Today Screen Soft Keys
6. WM5 Top & Bottom bar color adjustment
