Hi, I am in between getting the x51 and the x51v. I was wondering how much better the vga screen is. Does anyone have any screen shots? How is:rolling: :rolling: the video comparable on the two models?

well i have to say i saw my friends x50 and i compared it to my x51v and there is definitly a difference especially when web bowsing. For video it pretty noticable as well as the x51v has a separate video card.
I found a thread with screenshots. I think they're quite convincing. Once you go vga there is no turning back. You will never want to look at a qvga screen again, they will disgust you. It's 4 times the resolution. Since I got the x50v, everything I do with the pda has changed. I now watch movies on it, my calendar is on it, and wait until you see the tiny font!
Read the other thread and it will give you just an idea. As a user I will tell you that every single program you use will be enhanced, from the internet, to excel, word, video, you name it. Even the resale value of the high end pda is higher, so your investment will retain value.
Previous PDAs: Palm M500, Toshiba e335, Axim X50v (run over by car To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. )

actually only 2 times, right? 640x480 pixels, vs. 320x240... How do you get 4 times?

Gotta do the math! Each dimension has 2 times the number of pixels... therefore 2x2=4...or if you figure the number of pixels: 320x240=76,800. 640x480=307,200. 4x the pixels :)

DOH!!
Yep that's right. Past my bedtime... me no thinky.
ha ha....no worries. I've been studying so much recently (I have the Step 1 board exam for Med school in about 3 weeks), I can't think of normal words used in non-medical conversation :)
I read a wikipedia article on vga and it appears that this technology is over 18years old and it also says that its analog, but on our axim screens it should be digital
Well, VGA is defined as 640x480 resolution, and it has been around for a while (It was a big advancement). Laptop screens' resolutions are compared to VGA, ala SVGA (800x600), XVGA (1024x768), SXVGA (1280x1024?)... Hope I got some of those right, though feel free to correct me as I'm on my PDA about to go to bed..

Not the same thing.
VGA directly translates into "Video Graphics Adapter", the 15-pin port most of us use for monitors. The signal used is analog.
VGA also refers to the resolution. VGA resolution is 640x480. This is why sometimes cell phones have a 'VGA' camera; it takes pictures at 640x480. There is also SVGA, XVGA, and others, which refer to different resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, etc). CRT monitors used to be rated on this.
So for the Axim, all it means is that the screen is 640x480. It may be a digital signal, or it may be analog, I don't know, and it doesn't really matter.
An interesting side note here, a pure analog signal is actually SUPERIOR to digital. Digital transmits via computerized signals, (binary), so it has limited to the quality that can be delivered. Using audio as an example, there is a finite amount that the sound can vary, so some quality can be lost from it's pure instrumental or vocal source. The loss is extremely small, to the extent that very, very few people can even tell the difference. What this means though, is that a hi-fi cassette is actually better quality than a CD, because a cassette is analog. Think of how a phonograph record is made....it uses the soundwaves to cut grooves into a disk, the groves vary exactly with the sound.
However, digitial is typically a better choice because it is not as susceptable to interference....digital signal either is recieved in its entireity, or not at all.(so if you are buying cables for a digital signal, do not be suckered into the expensive ones-it makes no difference...you could use a coat hanger for a wire signal and have the same quality) Analog can be affected by other electronics, or with cell phones, range issues, and that causes static.
Ok, back on topic, VGA > QVGA, end of story :-)

I have never had a PDA with a QVGA screen, my Palm had a square HVGA screen (320x320). The step up from the Palm to the X51v was therefore faily incremental (but nonetheless noticable). Recently I was toying around with a friends QVGA iPaq, and nothing i had read could prepare me for the screen. Being able to see big, individual pixels is very annoying. Watching a movie on the QVGA screen was horrible. Also, consider the added benefits with the X51v: the ability to put content on external video devices (such as projectors), hardware video acceleration (for movies), a faster processor, and more ROM
