Question Moving From Windows Mobile 2003 to 5.0

Hi, everyone.

I am waiting for my X51v to arrive and am planning how to move from my iPAQ h2210 to the new device--and I'm excited!

Can anyone tell me if it will work to just do a Sprite backup on the 2210 and restore it to the X51v, or will I need to start over installing everything from scratch? (I'll probably do this later on when I have time, anyway, but would like to get up and running as quickly as possible for now.)

Also, I've been reading through the VGA-compatible software thread and finding it very interesting, but I have a lot of software that isn't on the list. Someone suggested a list of 5.0/X51v-INcompatible software, which I would find very helpful, but I haven't been able to find one. Does such a list exist? Right now, I care less about which programs support VGA than which ones will not run on my new device, and especially any that might cause problems if I install them.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Unfortunately, you will need to reinstall from scratch. If you want to continue to use Sprite on WM5, you will also need to upgradd to their latest WM5 compatible version. (Spb backup is another recommended WM5 backup utility.)

I don't know of any list that features non WM5 compatible software. However, you might want to do a search and/or post the specific titles you're thinking of and see what others say. Lots of people have gone from 2003/2002 to WM5 so you should be in good company. :)

As Gigi said, you need to reinstall from scratch. There is too much changes between 2003 and 5.0, and only sprite backup 5 works with WM5 btw. Also, don't worry about the VGA compatible software. Most QVGA applications have no problems running on a vga device. VGA optimized softwares just appear nicer. What you really worry about, as you stated in your post, is WM5 compatibility. Check out this site: http://www.wm5fixsite.com/ FYI, most commercial software developers have already updated their software to support the new OS.

If you can post the list of program you want, people here might be able to tell you whether they're compatible with WM5.

Thanks very much for the replies, Gigi and Patrick. I was hopeful that I might not have to start over, but I'm not surprised. It's not as though I hadn't already done it dozens of times!

Thanks for the heads up on Sprite Backup. I've been using it for years, but it looks like it would cost me almost as much to upgrade as to buy Spb Backup. I know that Spb has a good reputation, but I haven't seen the need previously to look into another backup program (although I knew it was out there). Does it have any advantages over Sprite? Can you point me to any comparative reviews?

Thanks also very much for the wm5fixsite link. It looks like it will be very helpful.

And since you've offered :approve: -- I'll post my long application list for comment later on.

Okay, here's my list. I'd appreciate any comments as to which of these I can expect to have problems with in WM5 (or to cause problems), as well as which ones I'm going to have to upgrade.

Thanks!

A quick scan of your list while cross-checking with the WM5 compatible software list suggests that most of your apps should work under WM5; however, it may be necessary for you to upgrade to the latest version to get this compatibility. For the apps that are not on the list, I'd suggest searching/posting in the forums. Don't forget to check the Applications forum as well.
