x51V Rocks!
I've owned 10 Windows CE PDAs in my time, starting with a Cassiopeia E11 and upgrading until my recent iPAQ hx4705 (VGA). I love my iPAQ, but it doesn't upgrade well to WM5 (compaction problem).
Because of the WM5 upgrade problem -- and the rumored phase-out of stand-alone Pocket PCs, I began looking for a backup unit in case my iPAQ ever developed problems. My search was exhaustive and very disappointing; all the reviews I read convinced me that nothing could compete with the quality of my iPAQ. So, I decided to go with another iPAQ -- an hx2795 (QVGA). Thank God for the 21 day return policy, because I returned it a week later. Reflecting back, I don't understand my satisfaction with the nine previous QVGA models I owned. I guess the hx4705 spoiled me :D.
As a final attempt, I decided to deviate from HP and try an Axim x51V. This was a non-trivial thing for me because I own many HP-specific peripherals. I've read good and bad about the model, but at least it came with WM5 and it is VGA. I posted several questions on the Axim Site and you were all gracious to answer them.
I received the x51V. After using it for a few days, I am amazed. It clearly is as good (or better) than my hx4705. The display contrast/color richness is debatable, but it clearly surpassed my expectation. Dell/HTC did a great job designing the Axim x51V. The size, form factor, VGA display, WiFi hardware button, mechanical D-pad (iPAQ has a touchpad), OS, etc. make it a top-of-the-line model. Moreover, it’s a sexy PDA! The only thing I need to do is make a few adapter cables so my HP peripherals will work with the Axim.
For anyone who is looking for a top notch PDA, don’t penny pinch and buy substandard…buy an Axim x51V. Sometimes the cliché “you get what you pay for” comes true…this is one of those times. In fact, with the Axim you get more than you paid for :).
