the hidden backup/restore rom function of x51/x51v

I found that there is a hidden function in the AximUpdate.exe released for x51/x51v,which can backup and restore rom image.

with the help of following tool I uploaded, you can do this too

http://bbs.pdafans.com/attachment.php?aid=328521

It' a Chinese version tool that can show the hidden controls of any application, but never mind, just check the checkbox at the left bottom of it,then open AximUpdate.exe, the hidden button will show~

I just noticed that on your third screenshot the device is an x51, ROM A01 and the OS is windows mobile 2003 second edition. How can that be?

Thanks for the heads-up tho.

I do not see the neet to back up my ROM at this point. I have the original ROM update file saved to my Gear Box Case USB hard drive. I have all of my applications saved to it as well as 'My Documents' folder and my SD and CF card data. I have upgraded my X51Vs ROM twice thanks to Dell so I have had plenty of practice. If I was really worried I would get one of the total back up softwares mentioned by other members on this site that do a complete job of backing up the entire unit. Of course this is IMHO.

I think the point of this thread, assuming it works, is to be able to extract the rom from any axim to get access to roms that are not released by Dell to the public. And then to be able to share the goodness. I think this is especially important to those wanting Roms in different languages other than english.

a more simple way to access the Dell Back Up dialog

I coded a small program that opens the Back up dialog when you open it. You have to put AximBackup.exe in your dell update folder.

Not sure if I totally get it here. Does this effectively act as "ghost" for the PDA? In other words, does this back up the full 256MB of flash rom on my x51v, and then in case of disaster, I can simply reload the full 256MB back onto my PDA for a perfect restore?

Since it's Dell software, I would bet that its preprogrammed to backup only the specific ROM area needed to recover from an unsuccessful upgrade -- in other words, only the OS and all pre-installed apps.
Any user data or user-installed apps would not be backed-up.
At least that's how all previous versions of Dell's ROM Upgrade worked.

I'm willing to 'share' my A08 rom, but i need to be sure that no personal documents wil be included.. So, my question is does it only backup the OS partition ?

Why does your screenshot show an X51v with the wrong operating system?

Regards
