Birthdays won't show on calendar

I have a X50v with WM2003 SE and I sync my calendar, email, contacts and tasks with Lotus Notes 6.5 using Mnotes. If I add a birthday date to my contacts it doesn't show up on my calendar, isn't it supposed to? Do I have to input all the birthdays as all day events just so I can have them recurring? What's the best way to have birthdays shown on the calendar?
