Is it bad to leave your X50v on the cradle for long periods of time?

I go a few days here and there without using my X50v and I'll leave it sit on the charger is this bad for the battery?

I did it with my X5 Advanced, and now my X51v sits on the cradle all day at work.

The charging circuit disconnects from the battery when it is fully charged, so there is no risk to the battery.

Actually the battery on the X50v will last longer if it is constantly charged. So the more often you charge it, the longer it will last.

The old recharable batteries, called NiCads, were not like that - but some people confuse that with the NiMH batteries that are in the Axims.

Anytime I am at home and not using my X50v, it is in its cradle. After all, that is its home.

The batteries that come with the Dell Axim are Li-ion (Lithium Ion) batteries. Most LI-ion packs (and all that come with Axims) have protective circuitry to prevent overcharging.
I know of No NiMH internal batteries available for the Axim series, but I have constructed an external charger battery pack that uses them.

woops - I was writing too fast NiMH became very popular with RC cars and trucks (Remote Control) over Nicad which use to be the universal recharble technology for everything (years ago). I sometimes get the terminology confused. Thanks for correcting me!!

But do you get any of the issues where the battery will forget it's maximum charge (If left charging all the time)? I know, in the past, where you had to condition batteries to get the full charge out of them, and then not keep them charged all the time...

I used to keep my Asus 620BT on charge all the time, and the battery doesn't last as long now as it did new... Just making sure as I prefer to keep my unit in the cradle too so it's always updated when I do something on the PC. (Dell X51v BTW)

This is one of the benefits of Li-Ion technology over NiCad and NiMH batteries, Li-Ions don't loose capacity due to keeping a constant charge, they don't have a memory effect, they can be left fully charged and will self-discharge at a rate much slower than NiMH and they have a much higher charge density over the other types.

The only problem with Li-Ions is that they do have a limited lifespan, from the day of manufacture they will slowly work towards their day of death. Keeping them cooler will extend their life while storing them in very warm environments will degrade their lifetime.

This is a tradeoff, and one a lot of people are willing to live with.

Learn about Li-Ion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li-ion :)

I leave mine in the cradle probably 80-90% of the time. No harm, no foul so far.
