Windows updates questions for n00b Axim X51v user

Hello everyone! I’m so glad to have found your forum. My new Axim X51v will arrive this afternoon, and as a previous Palm OS 5 user, I have some questions for you veterans.

First, is there an automatic windows update site for WM5?

If not, what updates do you recommend I download from Microsoft? There are quite a few downloads. I only want to download what I need.

Second, I also purchased a GPS from Dell (their brand wireless $229.00) with streets and trips 2005. They guaranteed me that I would get a free upgrade to ver. 2006. Anyone else found this true?

Third, besides the activesync trick in the sticky above, is there anything else I need to do to get my Axim up to max speed and reduce the number of crashes. I’d like to have something as hassle-free and reliable as my Palm.

On the Windows Update question, no, you cannot update or upgrade a PPC operating system through Windows Update.

It is up to the PPC manufacturer to provide updates to their customers. You would obtain these updates directly from the manufacturer -- Dell, in your case. If you visit Dell's support page, you can browse Axim update downloads.

Which downloads from Microsoft do you see? I would only recommend .Net Compact Framework 2.0 SP1.
Many other downloads are really for PC, not PPC - but "if it isn't broken, don't fix it".

I use tweaks2k.net which I have found has all the hacks u need other than the server trick u have mentioned. Also deselect the error reporting feature. You may or may not end up with issues either user error or program/ accessories issues but if you do somone on this site will probably have a resolution. Have a look at the tutorials and use the very nice search feature.

You are in the right place to learn about your AXIM and software.

By the way get yourself a backup program [I use Sprite]. and keep backups ready just incase. Its advice I wish I had listened 2.

Thanks for the info about Dell updates. I found those, and they are apparantly ROM updates.

Thanks for the backup info. I'm going to buy Sprite later today. I assume I would download it after purchasing and not have to wait.

Here's the other download updates I was talking about for windows mobile. You can see that there are quite a few, with Activesync 4.1 at the top of the list. Which of these may I need or more importantly, which of these have any of you downloaded that are perfectly happy with your Axim's performance?

Dell lied! After 1 hour on the phone and assuring me that I would get a free upgrade...nada

Ok, I bought streets and trips 2006 from Amazon. I just hope the voice command software gets a free upgrade. The version they sold me is for windows mobile 2003 only.
