Getting online w/ the Ax

Ok question...

At the office, we have an unsecured wireless signal I use with my laptop to get online. Works wonderfully with the laptop.

I try to get on with the Axim...it sees it, lists it, says "connecting" but then it doesnt and tries to connect with something that's not even there like my house signal which is 30 miles away! It goes thru the list it has, going over and over...but there is a signal right there in the office, it won't hook up when the laptop does just fine.

Why does it keep going thru the settings and doesnt hook up with the signal at the office and be done with it?

On the road, in my bus, my laptop gets online often, I do alot of sitting around on layovers, I'm a charter schoolbus driver, do trips only, no home~school routes anyways...... it finds and hook up with signals all the time, and some I know where they are. The Ax doesnt hook up with these others when it'll pop up the little message to pick a signal, I'll pick one, unsecured and then it doesn't do anything. The signal bars are still white with no signal. I don't get it...laptop's great, Ax's not. I hoped I wouldn't hafta take the laptop everywhere just to get online, so I got the Ax....now it's like, it doesnt like to hook up to those open signals.

Check & see. if WEP key is correct if you have WEP set up....
You might try using same settings in Axim as in yur laptop
Also see if in WLAN ettings you connect to work or internet...should use Work settings.....check out IkeHikers guides on the ite too

You said it was 'unsecured' and WEP is security so this shouldn't be an issue. The most common problem when an unsecured WiFi network appears to be working with a PC/laptop, but doesn't work with a PPC is because the router is operating in 'G only' mode.

About "G-only mode," Tweaks2k2 has an option that is supposed to allow your Axim to connect to a router in "G-only mode" without using 802.11g. I don't know if it works, though, as I have no need to try.

Axim WiFi will not connect to "G" mode of any Access Point. It is a limitation of the unit, only "B" mode is available.

well, many laptops have powerhouse of wireless networking cards. it's a little rediculous to expect a pda to have that same power. the problems you described do seem to explain the behavior when the signal isn't strong enough to connect.

wish there was a way to boost wireless networking strength :S.

Well, I dunno about that Kamel..I was at a private beach today, and the whole facility has wireless..I was in my bus online with it...it was a signal that needed a log in and password...but it worked pretty good.
it just seems it's funky about skipping the unsecured signals ....i dunno, it's just weird
