I had the same problem until i realized my stupidity make sure you select the physical drive no the logical drive. When you open drive a pop up will display both. I'm not sure if any of you did the same thing but it fixed my issue.

I, too, would like to know how to format the 4 gb card in the axim. I think I am having the same program as systemicchange: I can fill the card on my desktop (via a card reader), and it works for word and other smaller files, but when I try to use the files on the axim x51v it balks at the big files, such as mpg files.

I have the same issue like you have. BUT!
In my opinion x50/X51 Axim can handle SD cards with FAT16 filesystem and this filesystem has a limit of 2GB. If you format SD card on PC with cardreader, then you fomat the card to FAT32. FAT32 can handle 4GB. But Axim supports only FAT16 card.
Sorry for my poor English!

At first, you need a HexEditor. 010 Editor - The Professional Text/Hex Editor with Binary Templates
Put your card in the cardreader and run the Programm.
Choose "Open Drive" from the Menu and select the Physical Drive of your SD-Card.
Choose "Edit" -> "Select Range" from menu.
Start Address: 0
Size: 512
Press OK
Select "Edit" -> "Fill Bytes" from menu
Start Address: 0
Size: 512
Hex: 0
Decimal: 0
Press OK
Save.
Remove the SD-Card from the CardReader and put it in your Axim.
The Axim should ask you to format the new card. Press the Yes-Button and everything should work fine.
I've done the same mistake and this works great for me.
Remember that you can't use the SD-Card with your CardReader until you do a Firmware Update! Or just buy a new one with SD-Card 2.0 support.

Hello,
I had a similar problem with a 4GB SD card which was recognized as a 2 GB one by my LG KU 990 Viewty phone, so I tried the HexEditor solution. Not sure if I am doing something wrong but the external memory (SD card) is grayed out now on my phone although I can normally see the full 4 GB on my PC. Hence I cannot even reformat it on the mobile. I have tried reformatting it (FAT32) on my PC but it keeps not being recognized by my phone. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

I have the similar problem, my 4GB OCZ 150x card after formatted as FAT32 via winXp Format, is seen only 1GB. I thought it's because my CardReader (UCR-61) limitation. I followed this procedure. When I do Save, I've got "error" message. I think I got "error" is because after filling the first 512 bytes of the SD card, the CardCeader cannot access the SD card anymore, therefore the HexEditor pop up the "error". I think the "error" is fine. However, when I plug the SD card to the AXIM (X50v, WM6.1 A02), it doesn't ask to format the SD card. The File Explorer in WM6.1 doesn't see the card. I tried to RESET+ON/OFF+WIRELESS to bring up the bootloader hoping that the bootloader will ask to format the card, but it didn't. It hanged until I do hardreset. So, now my SD card is unreadable. I am thinking of trying to format the SD card using a digital camera. (In the pass, with X50v WM2003SE, the SD card was detected as 4GB.)

When I plug my SD card to the PowerShort A520 Camera (borrowed from my sister,) the camera can recognize the card with 3.8GB free space. I go ahead format the card. After that, my Axim can see the card with 4GB in size. I used an HP computer (of my brother) with built-in SD Card reader to double check, the HP show that it is formatted as FAT32.

That is incorrect - the Axim supports FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32
