Transferring data between storage cards

Hi,

I have an X50v with a 512MB CF card and a 1GB SD card. The SD card is new and has nothing on it. The CF card is full and I want to upgrade it to 1GB. My question is, can I just copy all of the CF data onto the SD card, install the new 1GB CF card, then copy all of the data back onto this new CF card? My concern is that the data may not be recognized on the new card due to a difference in the FAT file (or whatever the X50v calls its filing system). I really don't want to reinstall all of my programs onto the new CF card if I can get away with some other option.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

First, I assume you mean CF card vice CD card. Transfer of data between the cards will work fine regardless of the format on that card. When you transfer to the SD card, it will store the data in whatever format you have the SD in at that time. When you send it to the new CF card, it will store the data in the format you used for the CF card. Should be no problem at all.

What is a "CD" card? Do you mean CF for compact flash?
If you have a 512 mb CF (compact flash) card you can simply drag and drop the files between the CF card and SD card using a card reader. The files that are transferred (copied) in this manner are not changed at all. If the files ran on your axim from the CF card, they should run fine from the SD card. Good luck.

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

My apology about the "CD" entries; I did indeed mean CF. I have no idea where that came from, maybe the fact that I burned 10 picture CDs last night. Anyway, thanks for your responses. I feel much more at ease now about making the upgrade.

Format is for the storage medium, not the files. It doesn't matter if your eggs were stored in a 12-count post-consumer recycled paper carton or a straw basket; your omelette will taste the same.

When I updated to a larger CF card, I just turned off the Axim, used a card reader on the PC to copy from small CF card —> PC —> larger CF card. Insert new card and re-start Axim. Fast and simple. Turning off the Axim might not have even be neccessary. I just did it to be safe.

MeSue is on target. Use a card reader; it is faster, easier, and less error prone!

Generally speaking, a USB card reader will work fine for migrating to a different card. I have no experience with going fron SD to CF or from CF to SD nor with migrating a card on the PPC platfrom that has programs (executables) installed upon it.
