screen repair instructions??

I dropped my X50V the other day and got an inch and a half long crack in the screen. The screen works OK but the digitzer is obviously damaged. I can't get the lower part of the screen to respond properly when I touch it. Using the onscreen keyboard has become nearly impossible. I found a place to buy a replacement digitizer for only $50. That would be much better than buying a new axim. Even at the current bargain price its $375. Most likely I can do the surgery myself, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can find instructions and maybe even pictures if possible that would walk me through the process?

Thanks - Mike

I assume you didn't get CompleteCare from Dell. Assuming you're still under warranty, I would call their Customer Service and DON'T TELL THEM ABOUT THEB DROP, rather tell them your screen won't respond to taps properly. If they tell you it's not covered by the warranty, upgrade to WM5 and give them hell about that.

I've had the Axim for about 18months, so the warranty is expired. This may sound strange under the circumstances, I never buy extended warranties and never will. A warranty is a bet. There is a reason that companies are so hot to sell you extended warranties becuase they are big profit makers. As with most betting, if you bet enough, the house always wins. I might have been the winner in this case if I purchased the complete care warranty, but I would have lost on the last 50 items I purchased that never would have made use of the warranty. When it comes to insuring things ( and thats all this is - an insurance policy), you should never buy insurance anything you can afford to self insure. Insure your house, insure your car, but never insure anything thats worth less than $1000

Anyway, I found some instructions for the X5 that has photos and some written instruction for the X50V with no photos, and I purchased the part from PDAparts.com . Hopefully I have everything I need. If I have the time, I'll document the repairs with photos so the next person will have an easier time of it. Wish me luck.

I just repaired mine about 2 weeks ago. Its really pretty simple. I got instructions on epinions.com using x50v as a search word. Took about a half an hour.

Have a look in the accessories or hardware forums for my post on replacing the digitizer.

i wish i had seen your response sooner. i completed the repairs, but the instructions i used didn't caution about separating the metal frame from the LCD before removing the digitizer. As you can probably guess, i did scratch the LCD a bit around the edges. its only a minor imperfection, but had i read your post first i probably could have avoided that. The whole process wan't too bad though. The new digitizer only cost $50 and the repair took about 30-40 min. Certainly it beats giving Dell another $400 for a new Axim. Thanks to all for the help.
