Question Dell replaced my 2 month old Axim with a refurbished unit

I contacted Dell about problems I was having with the Axim I purchased the previous month. The problem was the CF card wasn't being recognized when I turned the power off, they said they were going to send a replacement Axim and I would have to send the one I purchased back. I thought they would send a new Axim to replace the defective one I purchased, since it was still under Warranty, but they sent a refurbished unit instead. Has anyone else received a refurbished unit as a replacement?

I don't really know how to explain this, but the screen on the new Axim is firmer than the refurbished unit Dell sent as a replacement. When I tap the screen on the new unit it really doesn't give,it's firm, but when I tap the screen on the replacement Axim it gives alot enough that I noticed the difference as soon as I began to install programs on it. Is this something that normally happens to the touch screen as it is used, and is it something I should be concerned about.

I don't know about the touch screen firmness, but refurbished replacements are not uncommon.

I am sure someone will give you better answer.

But from what I read on this forum, refurbished Dell are usually just as good as brand new. Also, if you aren't satisfied with your replacement, call Dell and they will, usually, send you another replacement.

When I got my axim replaced after a month (the Home button got stuck) I got a refurb instead. It's been 2 months since and my replacement works like a champ. It looked new, so didn't care. they'll just replace it should anything go wrong.

The idea behind refurbs is that you are trading in one slightly used unit for another slightly used unit.

I have been very happy with my refurbed X30. - it arrived in perfect shape and the only give-away was the sticker. In fact, it was in better shape that the one that broke - that one had a spot of damaged paint.

Most units that were returned and exchanged for "losing the card" had nothing wrong with them, other than the user never did the "fake server" cure at:

No amount of exchanges or returns will solve the active sync problem, other than doing the fake server trick. Too bad that Dell keeps exchanging units instead of telling people how to solve the problem.

My Refurbished Unit Works Great

After a year, Dell finally exchanged my X50v for a X51v that arrived as a refurbished unit.

The refurbished unit was every bit as good as a new one.

If your refurb has any issues, have them replace it again.

I had to get a replacement for a defective HD for my brand new Dell laptop and they sent me one that was marked refurbished. I was angry about that, since I had just bought the thing, and told the Dell rep so. He explained that they got the hard drive from the company that actually manufactured it, then modified it by installing the OS and all that. By law, if they make any modifications to a part, they have to mark it as refurbished. I don't know how that would work with a whole unit, but that's how "Kevin" explained the process for parts.

Dell's policy is that if you make a warranty exchange w/in the first 30 days of original purchase, you get a brand new unit. After 30 days it is usually a refurbished unit.

Don't despair, though. Refurbs have some advantages. Some are nothing more than unused returns where the packing (i.e. box, protective stickies, etc) was opened or removed, meaning nothing was inherently wrong w/the unit when it was returned. Even if this isn't the case w/this unit, all refurbs have been through additional QA before being ready to ship. So you actually stand a better chance of getting a solid performing unit in most cases.

BTW my replacement is a refurb, but it is head & shoulders above my original in both stability & quality of construction.
