The reg changes are not kept always because they aren't being flushed to flash memory. A general good procedure to apply reg changes in WM5 devices is:
- Change the desired registry values with your favorite reg editor.
- Suspend the axim using the power button.
- Wait for some seconds (10 or so). The registry changes are automatically written to flash.
- Soft reset.

Some members had to do this more than once to get it to stick. Othern had better successs with different reistry editor. I don't know why but you can try other registry editor to get this done for you. Resco regedit worked for me.
I tried it multiple times, using Rescoe RegEdit. I'll try RegKing, if I can find a WM5 version; the 2002 version crashes on my Axim.
well, I have tried two different reg edit programs....Resco and Regedit.net and it does not work...it still shows the battery. One thing, there is another entry on the registry that does not show in your example....it is TBOpt....I wonder if that being there is the problem?

Anyway, would love to get rid of the battery...
The method worked for me, using PHM regedit (freeware). Make sure you exit out of the program properly. change the today screen from a program and back again, then soft reset.
There are programs out there that offer a variety of tweaks. Tweaks2k, will do this for you and give you more control over the look. Check out software deals for information. It may be worth the dollars if you have a lot of tweaks that you want to do. There is also a lite version, but I can't remember the trial lets you get rid of the battery icon. Good Luck.
what do you mean "change the today screen from a program and back again"?
Open up another program. The new program usually puts something in the task bar, i.e forces a draw to the screen. Go to memory and shut down the program. then go back to the today scree. Basicially, trying to force some redraws to the screen so that new info is accessed. The task bar may or may not change, but then do the soft reset and see if that helps.
