Aximsiteactivesyncicon AS4.1 can't detect Axim! ZA problem?

Recently I found out that when I click 'explore' in AS, it pops up the c:// window instead of my axim directory. When I went to My Computer to check, I can't even find the 'Mobile Device' icon listed under 'other'. The axim syncs ok, but I can't access the files in it. Thinking its an AS problem, I uninstalled/reinstalled AS4.1. Now it can't even detect my ax! I have it search in com3 and allow usb connection but, nothing. When I unplug/ replug the usb cable into different ports, I keep getting the 'device failed to connect' tone (3 fast notes) instead of the regular 2 tones. I got a cable replacement, still no dice.
I got to thinking, I only noticed the can't explore problem after I installed the latest ZA update: zaSuiteSetup_65_722_000_en. Could this now be the problem? I know some users experienced ZA and AS problems before, but I've always gotten them to work with no problems. I've tried the AS-ZA troubleshooting guide in the MS website, tried turning off all anti-spyware/virus, firewall, allowed all AS related programs in program control, tried turning ZA off, all didn't work.
Now I'm downloading AS 4.2 to see if it works but I suspect not. Can someone please help? I've just downloaded the A12 rom and its sitting on my desktop just begging to make my ax happier and I can't do a damn thing about it...

Try this. I'll keep it simple at the beginning by addressing only the removal of AS. If you continue to have issues, we can remove AS from ZA.
  • Shut down ZA
  • Kill the AS processes wcescomm and wcesmgr using Windows Task Manager. The latter may not be on the task list.
  • Uninstall AS4.1.
  • Go to C:\windows\system32, then delete ceutil.dll and rapi.dll
  • Verify c:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync directory is gone. If not delete it.
  • Reinstall AS...the version doesn't matter.
  • Set up a new partnership.
if you get an access denied error, go into safe mode and continue the removal process.
