most of what comes later on in the guide is my own personal preference. the doc started out as a process for me so that every time I upgrade the ROM, I don't have to try to remember every little thing I did to get it "just right".
I took a bunch out, but left in the big things. I think i set the password up front so I wouldnt' forget. As a chief security officer - I'm big on passwords and preventative measures.
I'm 99.99998% sure of every step - as *I* experienced it. I had notepad running on one screen, and the ROM updater running on another. Having a heavy scientific background I was very meticuluous about do one step, record one step, do one step, record one step. Unfortunately, not having another Axim available I wasn't able to audit the process, but i'm fairly confident that everything is accurate down to the button presses.
As for the cradle recommendations, I'm planning to make another pass through the document and will include further warnings about not removing the unit from the cradle. thanks for the feedback!

Also, are you sure about the second hard reset not asking for hitting the button? I don't remember for sure but i thought i got the regular screens on the second hard reset. I also wonder about the disconnection of the usb cable before the update is complete including the final hard reset but if it worked for you I guess itis ok. this procedure should work fine for any version upgrading to A12 too. The rest seems ok but I would suggest that you re-iterate in caps to not remove the pda from the cradle at any time including the resets until it is done. there is another similar guide by Duke_box that is essentially the same without all of the other set up stuff.
I tried updating A06-A12 a while back, but it wouldn't update. Anyone have any idea why?
did you follow the procedure above? i'd like to keep this thread focused only on the procedure - not the pros/cons of upgrading, general questions about A12, etc.
Being that you tried the upgrade once already - following the above proceudre might not work perfectly. there could be some nuances, such as you might have already installed updater AXX, but not the actual ROM A12. give it a shot, but don't be suprised if there are some subtle differences.
For those who have trouble to update from A06 to A12, indeed I went through many obstacles too and finally the success is done on another Dell laptop which is considered a fairly new unit from my wife. Not many applications have been installed on it besides those standard Microsoft Office and few other security program.
The procedure or steps on the success trial is quite straight forward as is said in the update utility screen plus making sure you have Microsoft Activesync 4.2
My previous update failures on the 3 Axim X51V over two desktops made me believe it was the hardware version of X51V - A01 because this was the commonality of those 3 Axim X51V. I had turned off many services or agents running on the two desktops to make sure no other hidden application affecting the update but it was still failed until I switched to my wife computer (3rd laptops).
With all these tests and trials I have experienced with this updates, I conclude the desktop or laptops that is used to update is very important and the update utility was not able to tell what is stopping the process. :realmad:
Again, if you think you have done the steps listed from the update procedure with MS AS 4.2 installed and the update is still failed or stopped after the first the "hard reset", please try another desktop or laptop to work with. Find a cleaner one to be installed. I have done so many trials on this update on all 3 Axim. Each of them takes over 10 different times with different twicks in the past two weeks. Dell has been helpful to send me replacment one at a time after each failure. And finally, someone in the this forum confirm the update can be done on A01 hardware as well. This make me to try on the 3rd desktop and prove it works finally. :)
I wasnt able to get this to work on my newer computer i9300 dell inspirion with windows live firewall/virus. However on my OLD OLD desktop was able to get running.. worked simply.... It also has windows live things as do all the networked computers...
So im not sure if its firewalls that are interfearing as both had the same except one was windows media center(pro devices) and desktop was home.... so my advice to those who cant get it to work to go try it on another pc, even try msconfig and disable startup items..
Dell Tech Support would not give me any help with upgrading from A06 to A12 commenting on two seperate occasions that they do not recommend the update due to "issues" with A12. I decided to go through with it anyhow per the instructions in this thread and I am very satisfied thus far. I have noticed improved speeds.

I attempted the x51 A06->A12 update, and have a problem (and I could have 300 of these updates to do )
Like others, I now can not hard-reset the device (it just skips by the screen and does a soft reset). I initially tried the update with MS Active Sync 4.1, updated to 4.2 and re-tried, but the same result.
Right after the update files transfer over to the x51, it prompts for the hard-reset, which I do with the handheld in the cradle. It then skips by the hard-reset prompt and boots normally into the existing handheld, and the update program just sits there waiting, waiting, waiting. Active Sync recognizes the handheld (guest) but the update never continues, and I can not hard-reset the device.

No problem everyone. Thanks for the PM feedback, I'll be updating it shortly.
Hate to use a cliche, but just remember to "pay it forward" every now and then:approve:
Forgive my ignorance, but besides the satisfaction of the achievement, what does the upgrade do?
I also have a question, will the x51v recognize a 4GB SD card? I've looked all over the forum and cannot find an answer (Dell says it will only support 2GB)
Thanks
I was able to use the boot loader to upgrade a machine that would not upgrade in any other fashion. So if nothing else works this is definitely another option before sending your machine back to Dell (and maybe experiencing the same problem the next time around).
i have applied the A12 update but now i dont seem to have the function where the system asks for a password when it is turned on. the only way i can seem to enable it if it has a timed password. ie. it asks for it every x minutes. has this been moved elsewhere?
