Is it necessary to upgrade roms if all is working well. I have A04 with my Axim51V and Im not having any problems, especially since I did the active sync fix.

I've been away for ages, and am in the same boat. Still at a04.
Had some battery discharge issues recently and judt did the Activesync fake exchange server trick to hopefully fix that.
I never went to a06, don't rcall why, but generally my x51v is OK.
How important are these updates? Is a06 and a012 really worth the apparent hassle?! God I really miss PalmOS sometimes...
Just did the upgrade and it turned out ok. Not surprisingly, it had some of the usual dell bumps. Did a hard reset and then got things going, then it said the power was disconnected??
Note: after 1st hard reset I noticed x51v was running much faster I didn't realize how much it had slowed. 10sec boot time after password etc.
I rebooted and forgot to disable zone alarm and avg but fortunately they didn't interfere. The device was not recognized as in new hardware, the screen froze at first part of update and would not turn off or soft or hard reset I had to pull the battery out. After that when the update was appled and I went to hard reset the screen flashed by so quickly I had no time to press button 2. I tried like 4x and then said screw it and continued.
Running excellent now --- thanks for the write up and the pre prep - totally forgot about the mem card/firewall/AV etc.
Strangest thing happened to me:
After trying to upgrade from a06 to a12 for something like 50 times - trying most of the methods mentioned here and there - and failing, I tried again - this time with another desktop, this time a DEll desktop. Surprise surprise - it worked on the first try...
Good working PC makes a big difference in ROM update
I believe it. What OS were you running? I had an old computer I built 5 yrs ago running windows 2000 sp4. It had sketchy usb issues and was usb 1.0 upgraded to 2.0 etc. It would randomly disconnect, fail to connect for days then next moring connect fine. When i set up xp sp2 on a new box with newer usb 2.0 native, connections were fast and reliable. I think that makes a huge difference in the upgrade process becasue during upgrade after hard reset the axim will look like a new pocket pc to activesync and after firmware changes looke like new hardware to windows.

Forgive my ignorance, but besides the satisfaction of the achievement, what does the upgrade do?
I also have a question, will the x51v recognize a 4GB SD card? I've looked all over the forum and cannot find an answer (Dell says it will only support 2GB)
Thanks

You probably would have better luck getting someone to respond to your question if you either made it a new thread or posted under a more related topic.
As you hang around this site you will find two important points. #1 Dell support is in name only---if you want real support come to this site. #2 search for an answer and then post once you fail to find that answer. People will more likely respond faster if you post in the right forum and also indicate you have searched first for an answer.
There are many postings concerning CF/SD cards.
Yes, the 4gb SD card will work. I have an AData 150x 4gb SD card and it works without any problems. Others have the 8gb CF card and have no problems with it.
Just FYI ... following these instructions, I was able to upgrade from A1 all the way to A12 (in one shot!) just fine. I must second those who recommend this upgrade. System is much snappier now (menus paint faster, pick lists populate faster, etc.). I have seen a few issues with losing SD/CF cards so I have re-implemented the FST workaround in ActiveSync. We'll see how this goes.
I have tried like 10 times last night following the excellent guide on 3 different computers without success. My problem is that after the hard reset following 1 ROM upload, the update program shows me a grey out "CONTINUE" button.
I tried on a new nForce4 board with AMD X2, an Dell4600 on P4 and also an NForce2 Athlon XP.... all the same thing.
I noticed that after the 1st ROM upload, I can no longer press 2nd button from left to reset it to factory default.
Any ideas? Or do I have to go with the SD card flash route?
