After many failed attempts, I ended up using the SD image loader. Now I am at A12.
Hard reset now works. I think the toughest part about it was to press 3 buttons at the same time!

x2 Thank you very much :approve:
I followed it to a "T" & it worked on the 1st try.
Much snappier (agreed)
Now I see the USB to PC connection people have been referring to (yay) :)

I am confused on upgrading as they say do a backup but all the steps provided to do a backup do not seem to exist in my active sync. Is there a secret to doing a system backup? The help files says there should be an option in the tools menu of Active Sync but there is nothing listed there. I want to do this update even with the wish-washy results I am reading about.

I don't personally recommend trying the backup routine - but again, that's just me. It would be much more difficult to try to incorporate a backup sequence into this procedure, so I just did a complete vanilla installation. I have a similar procedure that walks me through reinstalling all the software I own and use so I don't forget my settings, etc. It takes a little additional time, but I know that when I'm done, I have my Axim exactly the way I want, and that everything is installed and working 100%.

Greetings all-
Please don't take this the wrong way... I'm not repeating this to be facetious. I think it makes sense to reiterate to keep this thread from being clogged with the hypotheticals...
This is my disclaimer excerpt from the original document:

Do NOT ask me if this procedure will work with your setup.
I don't know, and I don't have your hardware.
I can't guarantee you will read and follow this step-by-step. Don't do it for me, do it for you.
I don't do PIM or other backups (they were not meant to be used for ROM Upgrades)
I don't use software stored on SD cards.
I'm OCD. If you find an error/omission/tweak/update/fix, PLEASE let me know.
This is what I did, and it worked for me.
READ THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT BEFORE ATTEMPTING. DO NOT SKIP STEPS. DO NOT COLLECT $200.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
(don't blame me if your axim blows up, cat stops talking to you, daughter gets pregnant, etc)

Backup PIM
I am interested in upgrading from A01 to A12 on a Axim 51v. I have read the instructions from Dell and it states to backup data (PIM) prior to the upgrade, but I have no idea how. I can't seem to find any directions anywhere. Could you direct on how to back up my axim? I have active sync 4.2 as well. Thanks.

But I managed to put together a step-by-step procedure that gets an A06 x51v to be an A12 x51v. There's some partisan tuning and tweaking of my own. I'm not done with it, hence its v0.8. Let me know what you think.
If you use it and it works, you should feel compelled to send me donuts - I haven't had breakfast yet. (just kidding of course, this is pro bono:) ). Enjoy.

Upgrade from A01 to A12???
can I upgrade straight from the A01 rom to the A12 without doing other upgrades first? I have read the A06 to A12 and will try that if I see here that I can do that.
Axim X51v with A01 rom, A00 version hardware

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions for A12. I just made the A06 to A12 jump last night. Your instructions worked great. Even some of the steps that were meant to be your personal guide helped me recall some of the things that I wanted to do but wasn't thinking about.
Thanks again!
John

I just upgraded 2 days ago from 6 to 12 :approve:
When I was at the dell site it said one rom was for rom 6
and there was another for rom 4, You had to dig down one layer to find it:icon_lame
I noticed one other thing
While I was following the ao6>a12 step-by step-aximsite sticky [and it helped a lot]
That more than once the screen that I needed would come up behind the last screen [that should have closed but didn't]
So I would be sitting there waiting to be told what to do next but it was under the last screen [so keep an eye out for this]

Thanks for making the rom upgrade simple. Upgraded from A06 to A12 last weekend, no problem.

Just tried to do this and got to the point (almost the last few steps) where I had the Axim update on my laptops hdd and I clicked it... nothing happens. It says the file can't be found. I'm missing some step here.

I successfully did the upgrade from 06 to 12, and was having some trouble with the wi-fi and showing the proper strength and connection.
Aparently this is one of the numerous bugs with A12, and the Dell rep I spoke to, "Overseas Peter" and he said that Dell does not recomend the upgrade to A12, even though it is posted and will remain posted on their site.
He recomended to downgrade back to 04 or 06 rom, and I attempted that with no success. The Axim screen says "CAN'T DOWNGRADE IMAGE" and the next Dell rep advised me that downgrades cannot be done.
So if this is actually the case, and not just a "way out" for the rep to get rid of me, beware if you plan to upgrade, you won't be able to go back. They are sending me a replacement Axim with the 04 rom, I still have 8 days left under warranty.
Is this true, or is there a way to downgrade. I performed a hard reset and it says it is restoring the factory defaults, but still has the 12 rom loaded in.
Also, are there any significant reasons to have 12 vs 4 or 6 ????
