I decided to take the plunge and upgraded my X51 (416Mhz) yesterday from A05.

I'm using the Axim primarily for GPS, with the Pharos GPS-500 unit and Ostia 7.6 software and maps. I bought the CF adapter for the GPS-500 and was having lots of trouble with the unit not being recognized by the software and poor/slow tracking performance when I was able to get the software to see it (had to physically remove and re-install the CF adapter every time). It worked just fine via the cabled connection, though.

So the "improved CF performance" is the reason I decided to upgrade and I can report so far so good. There are no longer any issues whatsoever with either CF recognition or performance. I didn't bother with the patches that are available on Dell's site either. Just did the A12 upgrade.

I can best describe the Axim's overall performance as being better (I like it) but a little "different" in that programs or different screens sometimes take just a very small fraction of a second longer to open - but run very well once they are open.

So I am quite pleased with the upgrade. Just make sure to follow the directions provided on this thread to a tee ESPECIALLY the preparation instructions. In my opinion, the preparation part is of utmost criticality to achieve a successful upgrade and best way to eliminate potential pitfalls.

Purpose Of Last 2 Instructions

In the post the author mentions these two posts towards the end of the A06 to
A12 update:

Open internet explorer
-in the address bar type about:blank and click GO
-Click menu > Tools > options
-For home page, click Use Current
-click the security tab
-Uncheck Warn when changing to a page that is not secure
-Click ok
-Exit IE

((Tune the Device))

-Open File Explorer
-Navigate to \Windows
-Create a folder "StartupDeleted"
-Open the "startup" folder
-Cut the following: "odClientCeAutoLaunchSmart.exe", "SplashV"
-Paste them in the "StartupDeleted" folder
-Soft reset Axim

What is the purpose of using about:blank and Create a folder "StartupDeleted using the text suggested?

Thanks!

A stupid question: Why doesn't Dell offer such a software upgrade?!

I understand what they are doing but not the reason for the first one. it changes the present home page to a blank page. I don't see where that would matter.
the second one will help speed up the pda if those items are actually in the startup folder. Moving them to the newly created folder will make the pda startup faster. You can always move them back later if you need them.

I do this on all of my computers (including PPCs). I like my browsers to start up nice and snappy. Even if the home page is stored locally, I like to start with a blank slate. It's 100% preference, take it at face value.

Very excited to see people still using (and thoroughly critiquing) my doc! I haven't been doing much work on it lately, as I just bought an HTC (at&t) 8525. I'm going to start my WM6 upgrade doc in a few minutes. oh for joy :)

1. Windows Mobile V5.0 Adaptation Kit Update 2.3.1 enhancement.
2. Audio driver change (headset output gain adjustment) due to French audio regulation
3. Fix system can't wake up with CF card installed.
4. Enhance CF I/O card performance.
5. Fix CF serial modem port Open/Close issue.
6. Support Activesync serial connection switcher.

Oh and I can CONFIRM that the upgrade works on ActiveSync 4.5 (Build 5096).
Ahhh, found it.

a01 to a12 + pocketmac

i never updated before because everything worked fine. finally, i updated (my version was a01) out of necessity because i recently purchased pocketmac and couldn't get connected. i hadn't the "usb to pc" icon in my settings/connection folder. the update made it appear in the folder. then i was able to connect to pocketmac on my macbook.

i only had one problem installing the update. when i ran the install folder on the update, i got a message that said that i was missing the wceusbsh.sys file. i found it in the program files/ms activesync folder of my desktop and was able to copy it (and perhaps a couple other drivers from that folder, i can't remember) to my windows/system32/drivers folder. i re-hard resetted the axim, re-followed the instructions and everything went smoothly. thanks to the author.

Worried Brand new x51v

Hi there,

Because of the backup batt problem, Dell Argentina has just exchanged my old A12 x51v for a brand new A02 hardware with A04 Spanish OS.

With these specs, can I still make the update to English A12 ? I could care less about the language change. Do I have to take anything else into consideration for this update ?

Will it remain in A12 when I perform a hard reset afterwards ?

Thanx, regards,

Forgot to tell you, it seems mine is AKU 2.3.1
