Let me see if I understand... no Sprite Backup from A06 to A12 = no complete backup?!
I've been reading so many posts around the ROM upgrade issue... and the only thing I've noticed is that the only way to make a full backup of A06 is using a commercial program????
How could this microsoft guys dismiss this thing??? it was pretty logical that (as I made with the previous ROM version) a lot of people is no using sprite backup or other backup software, and that we were to use the internal backup manager...
So I lost all my contacts (not an email software user), my tasks, appointments... the software... even the games record!!!
Am I wrong? or there's a chance to recover the backup?
You can restore using the built-in backup, as stated in Dell's update intruction despite some warnings. Also, you can easily backup your contact and PIM data using ActiveSync. For the game records, are they THAT important? Though, I believe most games save the records in a specific file. So, if your game is on the storage card, you won't lost the records.

The games are not important... the matter is that when you try to restore your full backup it says that the backup fails, that it belongs to WM2003 and the pda doesn't boot anymore... so you have to hardreset it.
No matter what precautions, I think that it make no sense... this is what I call a BUG.

Did you try restoring using the built-in backup utility yourself? Did you do the backup on A06? The Dell instructions state that it should work.

Dell recommends to only backup PIM data from a previous system and restore to a new system. All other applications should be re-installed again on the new system to make sure new features are not disabled.
IMHO the best way to complete a ROM update would be to back up the PIM data to a PC, back up the 'My Documents' folder from the unit onto a SD or CF card in addition to an additional folder on your PC. Do a hard reset of your unit. Proceed with the ROM update. When finished load each application one at a time and test each one for functionallity and its complete data. Restore the 'My Documents' folder to the unit. This will assure nothing is left over from the previoius ROM OS and will keep your data intack. Its what I have done for all 3 of the ROM updates I have completed with out any issues resulting from the updating proccess.

It says you can try a full backup/restore but recommends PIM only. If you do a full backup it says, during restore, that it is a WM2003 backup and will only restore "My Documents" files - but if you continue the restore it screws it up and you have to hard reset. And this is from personal experience...

I wouldn't call this a bug - at least not an unknown one since it's been well-established that after ROM updates, your program backups won't restore.
With ROM updates, you're basically getting a new OS. If you upgraded Windows from 98 to XP, you wouldn't expect the image of your Win98 programs to work would you? Not the best comparison, but you get the idea.
At least they provided an update to fix things. As always, ROM updates are always optional.
And for others who haven't updated yet, I'd recommend backing up any config files for programs that you'll be reinstalling. Programs like iLauncher took a while for me to configure, and it'd be a real pain to have to redo it all. So I just copy the Ilauncher.ini file, along with all the files under \My Documents over to my SD card and copy back over after the ROM update.

After the A12 upgrade I was successfully able to restore my PIM info from the standard WM5 Back-Up program. I got the message that said it won't work, and WM2003...etc. I just kept OK'ing past the error message, and my PIM info DID restore. (I had previously tried a compete restore, which did NOT work).

If you failed to follow the upgrade instructions by not syncing with the pc, how is it Microsoft's fault? If your data was not important enough to follow these instructions, why should it be important to them. What did you think would happen to your data? Microsoft did not make provisions and you knew it. You made no provisions for this omission yet you don't seem to acknowledge any responsibility for the loss?
