update x51 to wm2005: can you have your battery discharged without loosing data?

Hello, I'm a newbie using ppc, and I mean it so maybe the question is too well-known, sorry for that. The thing is that I heard that the wm2005 handles the memory in a different way than wm2003 and allows that the battery is completely discharged for more than three days without loosing data when you turn on the ppc again, which is a thing that you can not do with the old OS and your x51, and you can with your new x51v. The question is: If you update your x51, can you get this improvement as well? Thanks (and sorry for my English).

Welcome to AximSite :)

You may have probably meant the x50 - the x51 is already WM5.

And yes, if you upgrade it, you'll also have persistent storage and protection against memory erasion. Along with the filesys.exe problem.

Therefore, I'm not really sure it's worth upgrading the x50.

The x51 already has WM5. It is the x50/v that have WM2003.

Welcome to the site. Its filled with great people that willingly give their time and experiences to others. It has a great 'search' feature and should find most answers to your questions but if it does not then be sure and ask away and some one will give you help.

The X51V is ROM based and does not need the battery to keep and maintain the OS, applications you load onto the unit and the data generated by your applications of those from the original OS applications. You can remove the battery from your unit and leave it out for 6 months or longer. Replace a charged battery any time and your unit will be exactly where you left it prior to turning it off. Its one of the great reasons I switched to the X51V. Another reason is that the ROM OS can be upgraded to resolve any issues that may be necessary in the future. At this point I have gone through ROM upgrades A04, A06 and the latest A12.

Thank you for the answers people, and yes, I meant the x50. But why do you say that it isn't worth the upgrade? I want to buy one of these and I don't have enough money to get a x51, so I think I'm going to buy an used x50 and upgrade it since I don't want to be worried about the battery and loosing anything.

There has been a lot of disappointment (complaining) in the WM5 upgrade to the X50 series of devices. Instability and extremely slow performance are but a couple you will find on here if you look around. It is generally perceived not to be a wise thing to do, no matter if it costs less or not than just getting an X51 series device. The general consensus (from what I've read) is to either get the X51 series with WM5 installed or to get the X50 series and keep WM2003se on it. If you're extremely worried about battery drains and such, buy a larger capacity battery and/or backup software for the X50.

Change the battery, or let the battery die on a X51v and you get a soft reset.

If you were working on a document your changes since last save will probably be gone. Otherwise, everything is remembered.
