How to downgrade to previous ROM

I tried to find the answer in previous posts but I didn't find. Maybe it's due to my bad english.
I have just upgrade from A01 (french ROM) to A04 the new french ROM.
I made a backup before to do it.
No problem to install the new ROM, it's OK, I checked in the system information.
But I can't restore my previous backup.
Despite the message saying that this backup was made with a previous OS, I tried to restore my backup. It seems to work but the Axim freezes just after the soft booting automaticaly done after the restore procedure.
Probably an incompatibility with some software installed.
But I would like to recover some data.

Is there a way to come back to the original ROM? I tried with A01 ROM found on the DELL site but I obtained a strange message on the PC like " The integrity checking of the image file failed. Reinstall the software 'System Update' " and on the Axim "Can't downgrade image".

The general rule is that you can not downgrade your ROM. It had been said that you can FLASH your ROM with the SD Image Loader but I don't know of anybody who has succesfully done it.

You can try the STG Viewer or HPC Vault to get data from your backup file. Read this review by Menneisyys. Its supposed to allow you to extract data from your backup file. Other than that....You might be stuck.

Regarding the FLASH procedure, I don't want to take the risk to definitely brake my AXIM.
The STG Viewer and HPC Vault software seem to be able to open only STG files, so created by ActiveSync.
So, I think I shall have to reinstall all except if somebody can fin a specific software that can do the same job than STG Viewer but with the backup file created by WM5.

I have an idea! I am going to try it in about 15 min as aoon as the download is complete. Download the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC. Install and get your backup file out of you memory card. If my guesses are right, the SDK will have a virtual storage card (and hopefully a backup program, if not, install the backup program you are using if possible). Copy the backup file there and restore to the virtual ppc, then copy the files bacvlk to the virtual storage card and back to your ppc.
