I think you problem is that you take the device out of the cradle for the first reset. activesnc loses the connection and the updater crashes. leave it in the cradle for the first reset, and don't do what I did and soft reset instead

The reason I asked my last question about the Axim X51v onscreen message because once the message is shown, I notice ActiveSync (desktop) is disconnected from the Axim. Is it supposed to be? I also notice aximupdate.exe does nothing as I monitor its activity with Process Explorer.

Kazkin, I appreciate your patience.

You need to try from another computer. Or a fresh install of windows (on another partition, preferably).

I had the exact same problem and this was the only way I could get A12 installed correctly. It has something to do with old resident versions of activesync, is my guess. I tried all sorts of uninstall/reboot/install combos, only the temporary fresh XP install worked.

Not ideal, but it works. Hope that helps.

Chris,

What do you mean by "how about weuse the sd card flash method?"

jfoster193,

Upon the completion of the part 1 of the A12 ROM installation, I notice connection between desktop and Axim is automatically broken. Is it noraml?

How do perform "soft reset"?

I'm sure if MicrosoftR ActiveSyncR Version 4.2.0 Build4876) would be the culprit. By the time, Dell developed the Update Utility, ActiveSync 4.2.0 hasn't been released.

The connection gets broken - yes. The Axim effectively goes through a power cycle, so it drops all connections.

It can't be just ActiveSync V4.2: That is the version I installed onto my XP machine just so that I could do the update, and mine worked very smoothly.

After the so-called part 1 of update installation, I left my Axim X51v on the cradle for 2 hours, but nothing happened.

Blank icons on ILauncher after A12 update...

I have blank icons on ILauncher (they are SD shortcuts). I have the latest version of Ilauncher and latest X51v ROM update.
Where is the problem?

I have the same problem that Armsys is experiencing. after the first"hard reset" as instructed, dell will soft reset. I then connect with activesync guest. then there is nothing. Dell axim update utility hangs and will not do anything. the axim just shows the today screen. there is no button to click on the utility. I tried this on a new computer with same result. the utility hangs at the same spot. only way of killing it will be by using ctrl-alt-del.

Any other suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem as armsys but I manage to make it to work by repeating the same upgrade proceduce on another computer. For me, I just use my laptop, install latest activesync and new rom executable there and repeat the same upgrade procedure. I did not reformat anything on my laptop. Once the installation is successful, the hard reset on my x51v is back and everything works.

My theory about failing to install on my first computer is that it has to do with USB driver.

Unfortunately, I tried with 3 of my computers and same thing occurs. update utility just hangs after the first hard reset.

Hobbs,

Just a wild guess: are your 3 computers of the same brand (same motherboard / same chipset, etc)? If so, the 3 failures you had is possibly just counted as 1.

One difference for me: when I switch to use my old laptop to do the update, the usb port is a slow 1.1 version, not 2.0 version. Perhaps you can plug in a usb 1.1 hub into your computer's usb port and try to upgrade from the hub.

The reason why I suspect it is related to usb driver compatibility problem is that activesync 4.2 seems to have an update (fix?) with the usb driver and that maybe the cause of the problem.

ntwong,

Your suspicion coincides with my troubleshooting yesterday in vain. Like hobbs, my effort failed. usb8023x.sys is probable culprit as suggested in http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=131429. Thanks for your tips, I'll work the usb 1.1 computers in the next few days.

The disturbing question is why programmers at Dell didn't dicover this bug prior their release of the A12 ROM update.

I too am having the same exact problem. I start the update, it goes through the "soft" reset, synce again, and then the update screen freezes and I have to shut it down through windows task manager. I once let it run over night, but to no avail. I have two more computers and will try it on them and let you know.
