Given the number of responses, I doubt that it's only few Axim users have been affected. The whole update installation procedure is faulty. Dell programmers should have foreseen these problems prior their release. Around the world, the users may uses various versions of Axim X51v hardware, USB, ActiveSync,...etc, not to mention different languages. All have an impact on the succss of the update.

Similar problem had occured to me. I have failed to complete the A12 ROM update on my 1st PC. But successfully completed the update on my 2nd PC
I used the same procedure, same update ROM and ActiveSync 4.2 on both occasion
As many mentioned, after the first hard reset. The Dell ROM update utility would stop without procede to the next step and the Axim would startup regularly without continue the update.
I believe the problem is a software bug on the Dell ROM update utility in which it is incompatiable with some newer USB port. The connection between the Axim and PC after the hard reset does not trigger the ROM update utility to procede to the next step. Even though the connection looks fine in ActiveSync. I totally understand the frustration and concern when the ROM update fail and hard reset no longer working.
I would suggest to those who have difficulty updating the ROM to try the update using another PC with USB 1.1 port and follow the update procedure by Duke_Box. I think this is the best way to troubleshoot the problem before Dell release a fix to this problem (if Dell would release one at all)

Hi All,
After trying to run A12 update with my desktop for 2 days, I couldn't get past the first first hard reset point.
So today I got out my old latitude laptop which only has USB1 and it went on OK.
This makes me think that the problem is a compatability with USB2.
Hope this is of some help.

I can confirm another successful installation. It wasn't working on my desktop, and it didn't work on my dad's laptop, but it worked on my Thinkpad, which has a USB 1.1 port. So, must be a 2.0 issue.

Hi, All,
Thanks for your valuable comments. It's too late for me to take advantage of your discovery of the USB 1.1 solution. My ROM update problem was already solved by a complete replacment with A12 ROM intalled. Indeed, it's significantly faster than all previous versions of ROM.

FWIW, I attempted my update with a USB 1.1 port and it did not work.

I had the same problem with you. Luckily I solved it eventually.
First, I tried the update on my own PC. It wasn't successful. I was just frustrated like you are. Then I saw the thread that the update utility won't work with .NET 2.0. I tried it on my laptop with ActiveSync 4.2 (latest version on MS site), it constantly lose connection between PC and PDA. Then I tried it on my company PC, it's newly built (my hard drive crashed....sigh), no ActiveSync was installed, .NET 1.1 (Not 2.0). I installed ActiveSync 4.1, and this time it works! After the first hard reset, instead of nothing, this time you will see a continue button appear in the bottom of update screen. Click it, follow the instruction, and you will have a A12 X51v.
Hope this helps.

It has nothing to do with the USB port. I have USB 2.0 and it didn't work, putting a fresh install of windows xp and fresh install of activesync 4.2 on a temporary partition on the same computer, and installing through that worked perfectly with no issues.
