Unsuccessful VGA A12 ROM Installation

After the so-called hardware reset, my Axim X51v remains to be of version A06. But why? I also notice that after pressing the hardware reset, Axim jumps directly to the Today screen, skipping the usual stylus position setting. Please help.

sounds like you only did the first part of the upgrade. Leave the pda in the cradle and connected through the whole process. the first hard reset it tells you to do looks like it didnt work but the hit continue on the software after it connects back up and it will finnish the upgrade.

Bid Dave,

Thanks for your quick rescue. But there's no "continue" button in my Dell Axim Update Utility dialog window. My Microsoft ActiveSync v4.2 (Build 4876) doesn't have t he "back up" option.

You're right: my A12 ROM iinstallation succeeded only the 1st part.

By the way, how can display a screen capture to my post here so that everyone can understand my problem. Thanks.

if you follow this thread .. you will notice that many ran into same problem ... the first hard reset is not really a hard reset ... read more for info .... we who were successful at it just ignored the first SNAFU and continued on to a successful ROM upgrade :p

I did. When it advised for backup, but my ActiveSync doesn't have feature. After reboot, the usual stylus setting was skipped. The Dell Axim Update Utility window freezes on the destop and requires pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to end (delete) the process (aximupdate.exe).

Please help. Thanks.

why would you expected the stylus settings when all you are doing is performing the "phantom" hard reset ??? ( it is not a hard reset !! )

and only AFTER a successful ROM upgrade would you be presented with the settings !! only after !!!

also ...

/best to perform a REAL hard reset BEFORE starting the upgrade to ensure a "FRESH" device and error free from registry conflicts!!!

/delete partnership from device and connect as guest !

Kazkin,
Thanks for your very detailed tip. But it won't work. I even deleted the profile in Windows registry, reboot, install VGA A20 ROM, and "hardware reset" the Axim X51v again and again and again. It fails.

But why?

Under the identical configuration (including CE-Star Chinese and nearly all Dinasoft products) , my last A06 installation went smoothly. But why does it fail this time?

Please help.

Now my Axim X51v loses the "normal" hardware reset function. How could I redress the problem?

I don't think you are following the instructions carefully enough !!

/ hard reset your device before you begin !!

~~~~~
the actual upgrade involves 2 hard resets ... ignore the 1st and the 2nd is the real one ... !
your above statement indicates to me that you are expecting to hard reset when the upgrade process telling you to do so ... and I have been telling you that the first hard reset is NOT a hard reset at all ... it is a "phantom" hard reset ... so don't expect it like so ... just continue on and the upgrade process will eventually do a hard reset for you anyway !!
again ... hard reset BEFORE starting ...the upgrade process is actually involves HARD RESETTING TWICE !!
summary:
/ hard reset before begin ... delete device name on desktop AS ... cradle as guest partnership.
/ after starting ... ignore the first hard reset being asked
/ after process went through ( 10-30 min. ) you will be asked a second hard reset ... the second time is when you actually do a hard reset !! IGNORE THE FIRST ONE !!!!!!
do all the above without removing the device from cradle !!!
Do you mean I have to wait even though the Axim x51v screen show:
Image Update
Image updated susccessfully
Please perform hard reset.
Do you mean I have to wait and do nothing?
I don't remember the exact wording but there are 2 different progresses:
total of 2 hard resets ( 1st is not considered a hard reset )
the upgrading/transfering also was 2 processes ...
/ the first one was to transfer the necessary files ( takes only a min. very quick )
after this quick process .. it will tell you to hard reset ... ignore if not successful ... this is where most people are puzzled and sounds like you are too !!
/ the second process ... which is the main one ( flashing of ROM ) ... could take anywhere from 10-30min.
if you haven't gone through the long 2nd process as above ... you are not successful with the upgrade ... why not take a look into the "about" menu ???
looking back ... it sounded like you have only completed 1/2 way ... I'm not sure what to tell you now ... all that could be advised has already been mentioned !
remember to keep device docked at all time !!
