TCPMP I like for video, but I use GSPlayer for audio, along with jmisurda's VGA fix for GSPlayer. X50Mix allows you to really adjust a lot of stuff with audio, and made a noticible difference with my setup. (Beyerdynamic DT770's, 80Ohm version)

I'm surprised that the Axim X50 will drive these headphones so well, my old X30 wouldn't be able to drive them at all...

Does GSPlayer allow for gapless playback? I'm surprised to see the ax can drive the DT770 properly w/o an amp, those are pretty bass heavy...

I think the headphones detuned the output filter so the raw PWM clock is feeding through. Try adding some resistors and/or inductors in series.
Or it could be a bad connection rectifying the PWM clock and making it worse.

The "Shure PA235 Level Attenuator" fixed my hiss problem. With my Shure SE530PTH it was very pronounced before adding it. Even with the attenuators volume all the way up it nearly eliminates it - if I turn it down 10% the hiss is gone completely.
