does anybody know a way to get rid of headphone hiss on an x51v when a program like tcpmp or mortplayer is open? it drives me crazy and really ruins the music for me... it's a ton more noticeable on low-impedence earphones like my cx300s.

what earphones do you use? try some low-impedence ones and you'll hear a ton of it with something like tcpmp. the thing is, it's completely a software-related problem, as when I'm looking at the today screen with nothing open I hear nothing, but as soon as I open up tcpmp so listen to some tunes the hiss turns on...

Go to Radio Shack (or some other electronics store) and get a 1/8" in-line volume control. You plug it into your Axim, then plug your headphones into the volume control. Turn your Axim's volume higher (way too loud to comfortably listen in your headphones), then turn the in-line volume control down. I had the same problem with a work PC a few years ago, and plugging one of those in between the PC and my headphones worked great.
I also had the almost opposite problem with TCPMP; it was too loud. I would have the volume as low as it could go, and it was still uncomfortably loud. Granted, I was listening to it in complete silence, but it was still ridiculous. The in-line doohicky did the trick then, too.
I definitely know what you mean with tcpmp being too loud. it's wierd actually, I just got new earphones (cx300s) to replace my md33s, and while the cx300 is supposed to be a copy of the md33s, with tcpmp the volume is perfect while my with my md33s it was too loud like you said.
I'll try the in-line volume controller, thanks for the suggestion.

I get the hiss on my X51v since the A12 update... I never noticed it before that using the same headphones. I get the hiss on all audio players, it seems a change to audio hardware/software has occured since the update. I was previously on A6 rom
It is noticable and not my imagination (I used to be an electronics service engineers and consider my hearing quite good!)
This should be in the multimedia thread - - Thanks mods....

It hisses every time it plays audio. When it's sitting on the today screen doing nothing, i'm guessing the audio chip isn't active. When a sound is played, like even the click sound of the start menu, it hisses after the click maybe for half a second, until the audio chip stops outputting completely. I don't think it's a solvable thing; I think it's just the chip we have. Quality is still quite good hiss withholding, so no worries there (for me, as long as music is playing i'm happy).
I have x50mix, haven't tried playung with it yet though...
Lat, I wish I could get the UM1s, those things are amazing. if you're correct about the audio chip, it's a real pity that dell decided not to fix it...
I'll keep you gys updated. thanks for all the help!
