Stop fighting the A12 update, call Dell. I tried to update my rom on Sunday for about 8 hours. On Monday, I called Dell, they could not do anything and shipped me a new (reburbished) unit that I recieved today. I opened the package and called Dell techs to walk me through the process so that if it screwed up again, they wouldn't blame me or my computer. The tech walked me through the entire process which she observed remotely on my computer. Guess what? This replacement unit is screwed up also. Without any hesitation, they're sending me a second replacement unit. The tech said they are having alot of problems with the A12 rom update. If you're having problems, it's not you, it's most likely the rom update. My advice is not to update unless your are determined to do so and don't mind the hassle that I'm experiencing. I will not try to update the next unit and will wait for them to come out with a new rom update.
Interesting since I did the ROM upgrade to A12 the day the file was posted on the Dell Support site. I had no issues with the upgrade process and no issues since then. I did keep my X51V in the cradle through both hard resets. Sorry for your experience with A12 but mine was positive.
My only concern is the program memory usage. I usually manage to have about 26-28 MB of Prgm memory left before the A12 Update. Now, with the update, I get about 22MB of Prgm mem left. Both with exact same settings and most prgms in the CF card. Should I be concerned?
I updated just a few days after the new file was posted and had no trouble whatsoever. I kept the PAD in the cradle the entire times as well. Maybe that has something to do with a successful upgrade.

I kept mine in the craddle with both units but still had problems. Tech rep said they were having alot of service call for the A12 update. I guess it's hit or miss with the update.

PTTTTTHHHH!!!! I'll just stay on my WM2K3.2 X50V and look for the best alternative when it's time.

I have been telling others about the same problems ever since my brand new Axim x51v arrived the end of June which i attempted to update. It seems to me this update only works if you have hardware version A00 or A01. Everyone i have chatted with that have had problems with dead Axims seem to have hardware version A02. I will not update my new replacement that i have gotten from Dell as I too have had to get a 2nd new unit. I do no think this update was fully tested on all hardware versions. I am also skeptical of the new Active Synch 4.2 as i have still had problems with it since I downloaded it. And to stop all the nay sayers, i am not a NEWBIE this is my 3rd PDA and from previous experiences i follow update instructions very carefully. And i have tried different computer s with different configurations.............they all give the same result. A dead Axim x51v. So you out there with x50's that want Win Mobile 5, I would stay with Win 2003SE until they come out with a proven upgrade method or get an x51v that already ahs Win Mobile 5 on it............but do not update until this update is fixed for all users. Sorry i jsut had to vent its been a frustrating time and i just got my new x51v fully configured the way i want it...........not going through that again!!!!!!!!:)
It happens to A01 units as well. I've had 3 or 4 refurbished units sent to me because of this ROM update problem. So far, I haven't found a definite fix for this problem . However, tell Dell your problem, flame them, beat down their door until they fix this problem. Also, ask them for an A06 ROM pda while you're at it. Make a backup of your A012 unit and restore it to the A06 unit. It seemed to work: No battery drainage, No Axim turning itself on after about 10 minutes. The only problem I found was that the password function no longer worked after the restore to the A06. For those of you who don't bother with a password anyway, you should be good to go. Unfortunately, I use the password function for the same reason I have one on my cell: I want to make as hard as possible for an unauthorized someone to get into my electronics. So, I'm pretty much stuck using this $h!tty A012 ROM till they find something that actually works. For those of you that don't have any problems, I salute you (and I don't mean the 1 finger. Get your mind out of the gutter). Would you be willing to trade Axims? Please?

Reading through these threads, I've seen more successful upgrades than failed one. And even if the majority had no problems whatsoever, there are still lots of people who failed. And unlike some people who firmly believe that their success is because of their superior ability to follow instructions, I believe claims that many upgrade problems are not even the user's fault. Although I cannot deny that some failures are also caused by not following instructions, I believe that there are those who followed the instructions properly and still failed. Not to mention problems after upgrading (sudden software compatibility, power drain, wifi_on+cradle=wsod, device password). It might be true that there is a great majority who never had any issues whatsoever with A12, it is also a fact that many are experiencing some issues. I for one don't want to risk being on the category of the "unfortunate". Specially with things I don't have control over.
I wonder, reading through these threads also, myself... if I am indeed the only one who never updated from A01!!!!! I basically applied a couple of the tricks (the change to disable ActiveSync's ghostly behavior, from Invid, and leaving BT/WiFi on at all times, which was already my inclination). And for my particular needs and profile (note and only for that -- I'm not trying to raise back up the silly arguments where some people claimed there was nothing at all wrong with WM5 on Axims), this leaves my A01 x51v not perfect, but mostly quite good.
I guess I'll upgrade either when this whole business settles down and everyone pretty much agrees that one ROM update is *the* one (even though I don't see a need for it), or when an upgrade actually adds functionality (to the BT stack, in particular, which I'm thinking is a lost cause at this point).
