I don't mean to be the negative naysayer in the group, but I have almost never been satisfied with my Axim X50. I became disenchanted with its very PC-like freeze-ups, crashes, and memory-management problems, as well as its problems with syncing with more than one PC, early on.

I have long missed my problem-free Palm Pilot which performed the tasks I needed it for without a single headache.

I suppose the demise of the Axim is not solely related to those problems, but also due to the pressures from PDA/cell phone combos, as well as Dell's own financial problems. But I just was never happy with it. If my wife hadn't bought it for me for a birthday gift, it would have been traded out two years ago.

Don't mean to multi-post, but I was just on the Dell website and don't see any Axims available, only accessories.

I purchased mine with 3 years of maintenance and complete care. What's going to happen in an year or so if it needs to be replaced?

The Axim has been relegated to the "OutLet" bin. It is now at full price, a typical marketing move when a product has been discontinued.

Probably will be replaced by a refurb unit.

I just bought my x51v off eBay last week. It's warranty expires in Nov. 07 and when I looked up the service tag it shows it's eligible for the service upgrade and extension. I'm waiting on their online quote. Will that warranty come to ME or the original buyer, as it has THEIR customer number. Me Thinks I can't use the upgrade and extension. Anyone else bought from eBay know about this??? Thanks, ed

Where to get a comparable mode?
I wonder if anyone makes a pocket pc that can compare to the X51V? I looked at Ipaq and did not see any 640x480 graphics anyplace. Does anyone have any idea? Suggestions?

If you have a customer number, just put the service tag into your account. Otherwise, I'd ask Dell how to do it - the warranty extension should be in your name.

Thanks, Acer seems to have the right replacement. So who needs Dell now?

I believe the Axim X51v has the best specs. I am perfectly happy with mine and hope it lasts for at least 5 yrs, as my X5 has. Also, the Acer has WM5 so basically is not better than Axim. Now when devices with WM6 start appearing, or with a WM6 update, then ........

For me, this is deja vu all over again. In 1998 I bought a Philips Velo 1 and then they promptly announced that they were discontinuing the handheld line. They did provide an update to WinCE 2.0 at least! That machine lasted ~5 years. In 2003 I bought a Toshiba Genio e550G. Toshiba/Audiovox discontinued that model and no Pocket PC 2003 update ever came out. If they had provided a 2003 update I might still be using it since it still works, but Vista doesn't support anything before Pocket PC 2003 and my 7-year-old XP computer was not going to last much longer. Now I get the Dell Axim X51v, which is in my opinion the best value on the market (or was) and what happens? - Dell decides to get out of the PDA business! Oh well. I'm sure I can get 4-5 years of use out of it even if there is no WM6 upgrade.

Perhaps I can put my perfect track record to work. Let me pick the machine that I think is the best - and you know what not to buy!

Any Axim Alternatives WITHOUT Cameras?
I know my x50v is not going to last much longer (got it when they first came out), but I am concerned it will last just long enough for a replacement (x51v ??) to be unavailable. Love the screen and processor - just never got Win 5.0 to work. NBD

My problem - I work at a place where Security is a bit tight; i.e., NO CAMERAS.
As getting caught with a camera can land you quickly on the street (best), or a loonnng time near Cuba (much worse), I can't go with 99.99% of the devices out there.

Any suggestions for an eventual Axim replacement?? (Please don't say, "Just buy a bunch of Axims while available and use them one at a time!!" )

Thanks
