LOL....I also want to join the list for adoption:exc: Anyways, my two cents.....
You stated your son being hard on electronics, I can totally relate to it. So this is my advice. It would be wise to invest in a warrenty plan. I opted for a 2 year warrenty and the best thing about it is that even if I'm a bit neglectful Dell will replace it no questions asked. A second thing to invest in is a shield for the screen. I reccommend invisible shield. Not only does their product live up to their claims (I did my own testing!), it's guarenteed for life (with free replacements of faulty shields, in which case I still have my original shield going on 8 months with no scrathes).
As the comparison between the 51 and the 51v. I as a student enjoy the VGA quality screen since I can view many PDF's with much more ease then in qVGA. I literally download all my Texts in PDF format and using adobes free PPC reader I can easily say that my x51v has saved me from hassling not only my laptop at times but the many books I need to do my courses. Not to mention that WM5 is much more stable then WM2003. But that's my opinion.
If you really want to look for a good deal on an Axim, I recently purchased two x51v's for an equivlant 250 US each, both with limited warrenties from Dell in fairly good condition (just a small unnoticable scratch on each). If you were to call Dell and have the warrenties transfered into your name (arrange this with the seller if possible), I was able court the fair lady at Dell to upgrade the warrenties for me for a reasonable price :).
So there you have it!!! I hope I've been helpful.
