That's just the way it is. There are several very small helper aps that will close programs and they are freeware. I used MagicButton exclusively with my x50v and wm2003se and didn't have any problems with it, except when it was on the wlan utility screen. On that screen I had to use the keyboard to either esc or close.

Another program is vBar. I am using it now in wm5. There are things I like about it, but all in all I like MagicButton better.

There are also more robust commercial programs that bundle that capability with other bells and whistles.

Good Luck. You will be closing in no time.

I have used MagicButton and VBar and Spb Pocket Plus (links to each on MyPDA), although not at the same time of course! I prefer MagicButton. I'm currently trying out something else that I think will replace MagicButton for me, but I'll have to wait and see.

+1 to MagicButton, always the first program I install after a hard reset.

+2 to magic button. I like to see which applications are open just like a desktop's taskbar.

Magic button user here, just use the hardware button to enable/disable wifi, and if u need to go under settings, close mb for a few seconds, i figures that the hard way. After a few soft resets, i knew the prob.

You asked "why" so here it is:

M$ wanted the WM devices to be as "fast" as the Palm, but given the way it started applications, that wasn't happening. The solution was not to shut down, but to push the application into the background, leave it running, and then the next time you "start" it, it's already there and comes back as fast as the Palm. Unfortunately, that means it's also taking up memory, consuming CPU cycles and generally slowing things down, so the utility writers came up with ways to make the X actually kill the application completely.

Here's another alternative for closing programs without loading additional software - bring up the soft keyboard and tap ctrl-Q to (Q)uit the application...

+1 for Inclose Mobile, seems to work nicely, and with a bit more functionality than MagicButton. None of the problems of tMan or others though.
