My Solution to Voice Command's Blank Contacts on WM5 particularly Axim x51v!

Hi All,

It appears to me that many people have been waiting for the solution that will solve MS Voice Command's blank contacts problem on WM5. I could be wrong but I hope you won't nail me for trying to help people out.

Here is what I have discovered for months now but was not ready to post my solution until recently when I proved it again as I upgraded to x51v ROM A12.

You have to properly install OzVGA/ and run your pocket pc once in OzVGA mode by pressing the OzVGA button when you launch the OzVGA program. Then while in OzVGA mode, revert back to seVGA mode, by launching OzVGA again and pressing the seVGA button.

It is my understanding that MS Voice Command needs some of the WM2003 libraries in order to launch the contacts appropriately, and properly installing OzVGA would mean that you have unzipped VgaRes.zip into the Windows library of your Axim unit which contains the proper WM2003 libraries. The one thing I am not sure of is why I have to switch to OzVGA mode once. My head still tells me that once the library files are there, you should already be ok. But I am not able to prove that, so if you successfully did it by just unzipping the contents of VgaRes.zip into the Windows library, do let me know.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy MS Voice Command, it is an awesome program especially if you combine it's power with Mortscript 3.1! Here is my other Axim thread that explains a little bit of how this is done.

God Bless!

Hmm, interesting find. I don't use MS Voice command, so I haven't encountered the above mentioned problem though...

And I agree that once the files are there, they should be used. My question is this, when you copy/paste the files, do all of the new files overwrite old files? If you simply copy files there which do not overwrite anything, they may not be used by Windows at all. Perhaps running OzVGA changes the files which Windows uses. For example, a registry value could point to use "Windows/file1.ext", but after running OzVGA that value is changed to "Windows/file2.ext". If you don't run OzVGA, the "new" (or, rather... old) files are still there, but not in use. Just a guess.

Nope, the files don't overwrite anything and I am kinda particular about that because I didn't want it to overwrite the beautiful VGA graphic libraries. But you may be right about the OzVGA triggering a change in the registry somewhere which seems to solve this problem, but then again, maybe copying it is all that needs to be done as maybe Voice Command which is built for WM2003 looks for it.

I love voice command. It is one of the most awesome program Microsoft has ever built. You should try it out sometime. I am sure you will be impressed as it does not require any voice training at all!

I think I tried it out once on my past X3adv. I'm sure it works fine, but I don't like everyone around me hearing what program I'm launching, or what I'm doing. Plus, the Axim doesn't look like a cellphone, and giving it commands in public would be just too overly geeky (for me)

I have all my most-used programs on my today screen, which I launch with a single finger tap - works wonders, and is 100% error prone :D

I would have to agree with you in the too geeky thing. That's me! :)

The only reason why I love the program is its usefulness and speed of searching and displaying contacts when people asks for their information from me. It doesn't happen too often but it sure is fun to show people how I look up information using the program.

I copied the files into the Windows Directory and the exe to my Start Menu. It soft-reset and I reverted it back to SEVGA and it didn't work. Hmm...maybe it's another software you have.

Hi,

Did you extract VgaRes in the WinXP environment and then manually copied the extracts into your pocket pc device's windows directory? If you answered yes here, then I would like to advise you to be sure that you really copied all the extracts into the pocket pc windows directory as the VgaRes.zip contains a few hidden files which are essential as well. The VgaRes contains a total of 19 files, 17 of which are visible and the last 2 are hidden. Make sure you copy those as well then perform the OzVGA to seVGA toggle again.

If this solves your problem, do share your success so that others can enjoy the solution as well.

For your reference, these are the names of the hidden dlls included in VgaRes.zip. Make sure that they are both copied into the pocket pc windows directory as well.

pmsnresources.96.dll
instmsgrresources.96.dll

Enjoy!

The zip contains 18 files---19 if you count OzVGA.exe. I deleted all the 96.dlls and 96.gifs and recopied my files from the Zip to the Windows directory in the Axim by using Activesync's Explore. Launched OzVGA and toggled to SeVGA without changing any settings.

I wished it would work but I got the same result. Nothing I'm afraid. I'll keep OzVGA, I kinda like it.

OK, I decided to do the due diligence and discovered that the VgaRes.zip file that comes from the OzVGA website really didn't include the two main files that I mentioned above. Well, I really don't know how I got a hold of it in the first place since it was in my OzVGA folder. Nevertheless, I decided to provide you a link to download the files that I actually use. This should do the trick.

Now, you can truly enjoy voice command!

I was always able to launch the box.net link without any login needed. But hey at least I am happy that you discovered another link that will give you the files that you needed. So did this solution fix the problem for you?

Let me know,

Unfortunately no. I'm trying to start over but now I can't delete those two dll files! :)

I'll keep add it. I want MSFT Voice Command to work with Contacts. It's really made for the WM2003SE. It's funny that when I first installed it on my X51v, it gave me the "Unknown Publisher" warning message. That was classic! Microsoft can't recognize itself!

hmmm. Did you also happen to run SdkCerts.cab when you installed OzVGA? I really did not do anything special but to copy the files, execute SdkCerts.cab, run OzVGA, switch to OzVGA mode once and then back to seVGA. I've done it a hundred times with the versions I have and I can prove it time and time again that it will work on my machine. I wonder what is different with yours? What Rom version are you in? This process worked when I was on Rom A06 and it still does after I recently upgraded to A12. Maybe that is the difference. Sorry I couldn't help you any more as I am out of ideas.

One last thing. You are installing voice command 1.5, right?
