Ok, Im a high school student thinking about getting an AXIM 51v

Ok, i know there are other threads but this one is specific to me. I can either get another PPC phone or pda phone, an mp3 player, or the axim. I have a cingular 8125. And its not good as a phone or as a ppc. Now my main reason to get the axim is to use it as an mp3 player. Or should i get a zen vision m?? I will use it for mp3s, web browsing, and a few things here and there... which do you guys reccommend?? Is it as good, better or worse then a dedicated mp3 player?

the X51v is great for all things, Music, Movies,Internet, Gaming and all around General computer use such as Word and Exce. But as a MP3 player alone, if you have many Gigs worth of music, you are probably better off using an Mp3 player for the amount of storage you get for the price.

well now i have about 7gbs... i dont think ill get past 10 within 3 years. and i wont keep the axim for more than 2 years. so storage isnt an issue. ill get a 10gb microdrive and a 2 or 4gb sd card for movies, and programs. but does anyone here tether with their axim?? do you leave bluetooth on all day? how long does it take to search something on the internet??

actually as of now, i think i may skip it... a pda phone is best for me. if i want to send a quick text, quick email, or just browse the web, i dont feel as akward doing it. taking out my big pda WITHOUT a keyboard... what was dell thinking, they should make an axim with a builtin harddrive and a slideout keyboard... id buy three... that would be amazing. sure, make the price 450, but if it can do everything why not?

Well as long as you have that much storage available for your Axim, then by all means buy the X51v, most of us don't have cards that big so MP3 players are a cheaper option for us in that regard. I have 2 DellDj's for that purpose. Anyway I only use the Blue tooth for my Wireless keyboard. I use the WIFI all the time for the Internet at home and while out, I seem to find many unsecure Wireless connections. Enjoy your new Toy, and Welcome to Aximsite!!!

Just curious, what do you mean by "8125 is not good as a phone or as a ppc"? Isn't 8125 a full functional PDA like x51v (not considering the difference in hardware specifications) as well as a phone? You should be able to play music on 8125 with third-party softwares too if WMP isn't enough, unless you're talking about the lack of memory.

Personally, buying the axim for just an mp3 player is a dumb idea. If you want an mp3 player buy one, not a pda. Pda is to be used for organizational tasks and entertainment purposes. With the PDA you also have to buy external memory which would cost more on its own than a mp3 player would. But, if you truely feel, not just "think," you will use the axim for more than mp3s, then a pda would be beneficial. If you require a new phone at the same time a PPC phone is a better choice.

I have a LG 7000 cell phone, a X51V PDA and a iPod 60gb Photo MP3 player. I use the iPod for additional transportable disk storeage. I keep a copy of all of my master applications (PC & Axim) on it, a image backup of my desktop and notebook, a copy of all of my digital images, a copy of all of my PC trouble shooting utilities, all of my mp3's, a copy of all of my PocketPC converted DVD movies, and a copy of all of my data files. I have tried my X51V as a mp3 player and actually it works quite well. My X51V I use as a Pocket PC first and then a PIM device. Any excel or word file I want to update on the fly during the day I keep on my X51V. I have a 8gb cF micro drive and a 512mb SD card for my X51V and both are always inserted at all times. I think personal requirements should drive what and how many devices a person needs simply because we are all different people with different activities and needs IMHO.

I personally think there are gadgets built to do SOME things great, but none of them do ALL things well. I have my x51v for doing portable computing, reading, viewing movies, and net surfing on the go. I have my Zen Nano plus for mp3's, and my Kiocera for my cellphone. Granted, all three combined do take up more space than one "All in one" gadget. But I have the best of each catagory, and they each take a different space on my clothes. (pocket, beltclip, armband) I can also play games or watch movies on my pda while listening to music in one ear and talking on the phone with the other. Is this what they meant by "Multitasking"?

Not sure, but multitasking generally means running several applications at same time. Palm, as I heard, can't multitask. Again, I'm not sure about all the detail.

If your looking for what a high school kid can do with an axim x50/x51 series PDA, well, that depends on how capable the Hypothetical student is. You Can make these PDA's do all the following things that relate to high school but only carry one item:

Standard PIM functions (Class, homework, address, ect database)

Light work on homework with office software (you'd really dont wanna do an entire essay, but to review and edit)

Math class Calculator (TI-89 emulator and a good units converter like xconverter pro)

Voice recorder (for recording classes)

MP3 player

Video Player

Video games (native and emulators)

Picture viewing and light editing

Light file sharing with other PDA users

weather forecasts (okay, thats something i use it for everyday)

PDF Ebook and magazine viewer

Quick hand written notes

Plus:

If your at a wifi access point:

Light internet browsiing for research
Chattting on the internet

Now, In My Humble Opinion, the x51V/x50v is the most usable PDA for a HS student. The delema is that a cheap laptop approachs the cost of this PDA. But what laptops dont do that pdas do is fit in your pocket and can be ready in an instant at all times.

I have both a X50v and a Cingular 8125. I only use the X50v to take notes during class, because my keyboard will not work on the 8125. If I could get the keyboard to work in the 8125 then I would see my X50v. The 8125 will play MP3, movies, and it is a good PDA and phone. Microsoft's dialer is pretty bad, so I recommend you put the E-Ten dialer face on it.

Palm OS 5 can multi task. You can run an MP3 in the backround while you work on a word document, and switch between running programs, but it doesn't leave programs running in the backround when not in use.
