Some remarks to my previous post:
  • Aximizer also adds a car charger circuit. But it can also be added to my proposed full external setup.
  • Aximizer provides an audio preamplifier to slightly increase audio output. It was to match my car stereo volume input. But maybe it ca be done via software, search the forum, I recently read something about it.
  • Aximizer applies 5v directly to USB HUB when car 12v or home Axim charger is connected.
  • If you connect “special USB devices” other than mass storage, mice and keyboards may be you will need a USB driver for it. For external USB touchscreen you will need eGalax driver.

Take a look at post #24.

I did.
I built circuit board at very old style: manually writing the lines on PCB with special marker and then appling acid.

There are few standards about interfacing PC-to-car for monitoring & diagnostics & configuration. The most common is VAG (volkswagen audi group) but there are some ones else, I have no idea about which one Ford uses.
Seach Ebay for interface devices based on ELM323 and ELM327 (just search ELM323 or ELM327). Both are microcontoller chips, ELM323 is just for VAG protocol, ELM327 is multiprotocol. ELM327 based devices should be valid for you, but Ebay sellers use to give a list of valir cars.
You will find BT devices, RS232 devices and USB devices but remember:
Still if you have any CF USB host (SolarExpress or Ratoc) there is NO USB software for PDA, at least I did not head about it.
I only know about software for serial devices. It is supposed a BT device should be valid because it appears as a virtual COM port (serial) but I have never tried nor read a positive report about it.
The only free software I know for PDA is OBD Gauge.
Ebay sellers use to direct you about valid software and compatible devices.
Good luck and report your experience about it.

In addition to my previous port I have to say:
OBD Gauge only deals with serial port, but at its web site we can find links to BT interface devices, so we must assume they are valid.
In that case a BT device is the best option.

afarre, I didn't see anyone asking this question, so I'll shoot it out. I think it deserves attention.

Do you think that the USB host on Axim X51v can work somehow with USB Broadband modems like this one:

3 UK Broadband

If yes, this would mean, our lovely Axim X51v would be always Internet-ready on the road.

Probbaly for the initial run, we'll have to connect it to a PC to get it registered on the network. Then, if somehow one investigates how to USB modem works can drag the GPRS traffic through the CF host. I think speed should be about OK. I know the only issue would be a driver.

What do you think of all this?

GPRS prices are falling down, I'd be happy to make my Axim X51v a truely internet mobile (without the need for WiFi, especally when youre on the road).

If someone with greater knowledge can share ideas...

Btw, do you know if inside those USB modems there is a hidden SIM card (if it is, do you think it can be taken out and put in Mobile, or use CF SIM GPRS adapter to get online). Do you have experience with CF GPRS hosts?

Thanks a lot in advance.

  1. First ou need to make sure the device is USB 1.1 compatible, both Ratoc and SolarExpress CF provides 1.1 USB.
  2. Find a Windows Mobile or Windows CE driver (a hard nut to crack).
If you meet both requirements still need to know that max USB 1.1 speed is 12Mb/s but the maximum you will get with Ratoc is about 1.6Mb/s. See this Ratoc FAQ to know why: About the transfer rate of the CFU1U

An easier option would be to use a 3G phone and a BT connection...

Right!, this would be the better option.
Other thing is people already having that device or planning to buy it to use with a laptop an would like to give it a try with Axim.
But I do not think it is 1.1 compatible and I do not belive it could be find a WM driver for it.

Thank you guys.

How would you share the 3G phones connection through a BT to the Axim? What are the steps?

1) enable bluetooth on axim and phone.
2) pair axim to phone.
3) in your axim, go settings -> connections -> add new connection
4) follow the on-screen instructions, and put the correct number etc in. I'm pretty sure that over here in the UK, packet data connections for most mobile networks use *#6666# or something silly like that as their call number (can't remember exactly, google is your friend) and the username and password are the network name (example uname vodafone pass vodafone).
5) tell axim to connect, and it'll do the rest, including dialling the packet data connection on your phone!

Thank you. It worked. Just needed to find the settings for O2 UK (username: faster, pass: password, number to dial: *99#). I'll make use of my 3GB monthly GPRS allowance (trying to cope with their fair usage policy)

Sorry, this a mod only for Dell Axim X51v.
If you want to buid your own device for your PDA/Smartphone you have plenty of information at first post, but you need to desing your own device according to what you want and conectivity ports available at your phone.
But remember it is not woth to build one for a current phone, it is difficult to find one plenty of conectivity (USB Host, VGA out, serial port, etc), current devices conectivity es mainly wireless based and only some ones have TV out, but none VGA out.
Most closer current small devices plenty of conectivy are UMPCs and you wont need to build anything for them.
Other good idea are current Netbooks, it is unbeliveable what you get for just $300 and 1Kg.
