Should the X50v be upgraded to WM5? (when not required)
Very simple. If you had a X50v, completely new, woudl you upgrade it to WM5 just for the hell of it? are the advantages of 5 that much better than PPC03 that the shortcommings are minor?
Or would you just leave it running PPC 2003?

Depends on what your going to do with it.. is performs better with wm2003 (and less/no bugs) BUT if you only use it once in a while for lets say navigation, the persistant memory is very nice when you wont charge it for a few days.

I bought the upgrade CD in Oct but was quite happy with my X50V and therefore didn't apply the upgrade,. I was waiting on Dell to issue a new rom solving all the problems everyone was having. As time went on and it became apparent that Dell was not going to issue a revision and that aximsite members were being successful in getting Dell to upgrade them to a X51V, I decided to take the plunge. Why not see if I could be one of the lucky ones and get it working and if not then see if Dell would replace it. Well, I couldn't get the upgrade CD to install WM5 and when I contacted Dell they quickly offered to replace it with a X51V.
So in my situation, I believe it was worth taking the chance and upgrade.
For over 1 year, I have had my x50v with wm 2003. To this day, I see no reason to upgrade (if a later year in an os is upgrading). My x50v works great. Over the years, I have had 4 other ppcs; none have been as stable as my x50v. My axim has lots of software that doesn't cause resets.
When I ordered my ppc from Dell, I also got the wm 2005 cd (actuall, I got two!). They are still in there unopened packages and will remain there.
Ummm... isn't WM5 just a bad idea on the entire X50 series? Sure, persistent memory is neat, but the X50 series has half the ROM of the X51 series. X50 series was not designed with WM5 in mind. X51 was. Simple.
from my experience the x50v can work fine on wm5 if the tweaks mentioned here are done but, after about a week or so things begin to bog down and the axim will eventually brick or threaten to brick. That has happened to me twice on my x50v and after the second time I decided to get it replaced with this x51v that I have right now.
For sanity's sake, I would strongly advise anyone with the X50v to leave it alone! ppc 2003SE is developed, stable and robust. I replaced a new X51v during the 21 day exchange period with a refurbished X50v. No regrets! I'll have to be careful not to break it because I don't think we'll see a stable o/s until "Photon" (WM6?) due late 2008.
