a01 or A012

I just bought my axim x51v one month ago. It had problems with not turnig on, not recognising CF card etc. I just did the active sync trick. But now Im asking myself, because I have A01Rom, is it wise to put the A012 rom in it? Does it have more advantages? And how do I update my Romversion? I hope someone can help me.

Or do I have to wait for certain problems to appear, before I update?

the update is more than just a couple bug fixes. its like swapping a V8 into a pinto. speed, responsiveness, and general envy by your peers will all increase. follow my guide below and you'll never look back...

Your guide is for A06 to A12. Can this guide be used in exactly the same manner for A01 to A12?

That guide is good but I don't see why you need to set the password. I would change that to hit 'skip' so that you don't have to bother with it each time. Also, are you sure about the second hard reset not asking for hitting the button? I don't remember for sure but i thought i got the regular screens on the second hard reset. I also wonder about the disconnection of the usb cable before the update is complete including the final hard reset but if it worked for you I guess itis ok. this procedure should work fine for any version upgrading to A12 too. The rest seems ok but I would suggest that you re-iterate in caps to not remove the pda from the cradle at any time including the resets until it is done. there is another similar guide by Duke_box that is essentially the same without all of the other set up stuff.

Sleep

Must say I chickened out of the ROM updates when I couldn't get the first few to work. So I continue (happily) with AO1 following the 'fake' server fix (a 'must').

That isn't a bad credo to follow. I just can't leave well enough alone i guess. I have to tinker. I am the neighborhood gadget man. people come to my office and are in wonder of all the neat junk on my desk. lots of wireless stuff, a few satellite phones we use for test purposes, gps's. nice to be able to work with something i love to play with at the same time.

I've had A01 a year now and my Ax works very well, fast and stable after the few fixes. Let sleeping dogs lie!

as per the disclaimer type thing - i'm not going to say "yes" because i haven't tested it. however, i don't forsee any insurmountable problems. other people have gone from A01, A02, and A04 using my procedure. maybe some minor inconsistencies, but the gist is the same

most of what comes later on in the guide is my own personal preference. the doc started out as a process for me so that every time I upgrade the ROM, I don't have to try to remember every little thing I did to get it "just right".

I took a bunch out, but left in the big things. I think i set the password up front so I wouldnt' forget. As a chief security officer - I'm big on passwords and preventative measures.

I'm 99.99998% sure of every step - as *I* experienced it. I had notepad running on one screen, and the ROM updater running on another. Having a heavy scientific background I was very meticuluous about do one step, record one step, do one step, record one step. Unfortunately, not having another Axim available I wasn't able to audit the process, but i'm fairly confident that everything is accurate down to the button presses.

As for the cradle recommendations, I'm planning to make another pass through the document and will include further warnings about not removing the unit from the cradle. thanks for the feedback!
