I have this problem since day one I got the x51v. The Axim can see the SD card, but it takes a couple of seconds ( up to 5 ). I spoke to Dell customer service and they even replaced the Axim ( to no avail though ). I spent an hour speaking to the CS rep, and they admited it is an OS problem and said MS is working on that. I waited till A12 released, but it did not help. And, yes, I applied the FST before and after A12, and that did not help either.
So the problem is not that benign. Because of this I can not install any application on the card. I mean, the installation itself goes through fine, but if you run an application and turn off Axim it craches after you turn the PPC on. Some applications, e.g. MS Pocket Streets must be restarted after that even if installed in main memory since the maps are on the SD card and they can not read the file on turning on.
Does anybody else experience this or it is just me?
Yep. I can't swear, but it looks like the same is happening with the CF card too. I tried two SD cards and one CF card. BTW, the first card worked fine in my old X5, and I never had this problem with the X5 or my daughter X50 which is running 2003SE, so I am guessing it is WM5
I am using a plain SanDisk (I) 1GB SD card with no issues. I only have a backup program and numerous PDF and word documents on the card. I can see the card through my desktop and using the file explore of WM5.
I am also using a transcend 8GB CF with no issues. This card is being used for video and audio storage.
I have an X51v with A12.
I know this is a stupid question, but did you try and reformat the SD card to hopefully get a fresh clean card?
I have been using a Kingston 1GB SD card in my Axim X51 (WM5 A12) with no problems. Have most of my applications and most of my data stored and run from there.

Well, I can't say it is stupid, because I would ask the same question if I did a "tech support call" for an unknown person... Yes, I refromatted the card several times both on PPC and on a desktop in the cardreader.
And, yes, I am using the cards as storage for movies. But in most cases I would install my apps on the card too, to save the space in main memory.
I might have the same problem with the adata card -- applications that
are supposed to run on the startup (the ones that have shortcuts in the
startup folder) do not run with an error that the file they are pointing
to does not exist, incase the application is installed on the sd card.
mzel, is your x51v's power setting "full power off" or default "screen off".
From my personel experience, I don't think WM5.0 is the reason. I have used A01, A02, A04, A06 and now A12 and never had problem with different cards. These cards include Kingston 1GB, PNY 1GB, 2GB, Patriot 2GB, Corsair 2GB SD, and SanDisk 1GB CF. I run iGuidance and other programs on my SD, and can turn on/off my axim (screen off only, not complete power off) without having to exit the programs.

Geff, are you talking about the power button setting in the power setup? That applies to pressing and holding the power button, and secondly, why would I not want to full power off my PPC? To let it run forever till it runs out of juice?
Braincat, yes that is the same problem. Try opening the File explorer, navigate to the SD card, power off the machine, and then power it back on. The explorer will switch to the root directory, showing no card is found. Several seconds later it will reappear.
Sometimes I have a somewhat similar problem with my Kingston 1GB SD card (I have no trouble with my Kingston 2GB CF, 8GB RiData CF, or 4GB Patriot SD cards, though). However, I have to take the card out and reinsert it, and sometimes do a soft reset as well, to fix it.

I have wisbar installed, and my theme is on my CF card. When i first power up my axim (from a soft reset) my theme is all white (start menu is impossible to read) so i have to wait like 5 seconds and click on it again and it will reload the theme correctly. I am using a high end 512mb cf card. I also have the same problem with SD cards. I am running an X51 with wm5 (didnt have this problem on my x50 with wm2003 (or wm5 as far as i can remember))
Do you have a "My Documents" folder on the root of the card? If you don't have that folder, the OS creates a file called "ignoremydocs" (or something similar) of 0 length to signal that My Documents is not there. When the card is inserted, if the OS sees that 0 length file it will then do a complete inventory of the directory, which can take some time on a large card.
To fix, create a My Documents folder and delete the 0 length file.

X51v has plenty of built-in storage (196MB usable ROM) for apps. I installed all my apps (most of them require less than 5MB a piece) in the ROM and still have way more than 100MB left. All the maps, movies, mp3 are stored on the SD card. By doing this I can make sure the Axim runs fast and stable, and even if it gets bricked I still have all the data on the SD. This setup is very similar to a desktop computer on which you install your apps on your internal hard drive and put movies on your USB 2.0 external drive. People usually don't install apps on the USB external drive. And yes, USB external drive takes a few seconds to be accessible after full power on and off.

No, adding or removing the ignore_my_docs file does not change anything.
And some application require restart even if they are installed in main memory, but the file you are accessing is on the card.
