Plus, the temp Internet files, IIRC, go into the persistent storage. At most, you' MIGHT get some bnefits viewing large webpages... maybe.

I tend to disagree with you cage85. There are large programs such as OCN5 which barely run on WM5 currently. I have to soft reset my device and disable most today plugins to clear enough ram to run it. I don't believe this would be a problem if OCN5 had another 64mb of ram to use at start up.

i think you're still missing my point. since windows mobile 5 isn't programmed for devices with more than 64MB of RAM, it doesn't know how to utilize it, and therefore OCN5 probably wouldn't be able to make use of the extra memory. is even OCM5 programmed to make use of more than 64MB of RAM? probably not.

What cage85 is saying is that having 128MB of RAM on a WM5 device is like giving someone two pairs of shoes. Yeah they have 2 pairs now, but they can only use one (at a time). WM5 can't use more than one pair of shoes, even though you give it two, so programs it runs won't use the extra pair because the OS doesn't recognize it as useable.
Kinda.

In other words, we're back to the days of Win95 and the 128MB upper limit?

Certainly it is. Most manufacturers don't provide more than 64 MB because the memory is no longer split between programs and storage, but there's nothing preventing WM5 from recognizing and using an additional 64 MB.

I stand corrected. Maximum size is 256MB RAM addressable by the OS - but whether we'd get enough extra 'use' out of the Axim at the expense of battery life (more RAM = more power usage) is another question.
Anyone here care to send an x51v into PPCTechs to see how things perform 'before' and 'after'?

I'm upgrading as soon as my waranty runs out...
I want to run Quake 3 on my x51v.
As for battery life, get a spare 2200mah and don't worry about it.

Given that I don't run Quake III on my units (videos, web surfing), I'm not sure if the 128MB upgrade is worth it for me... yet. It might help with some huge web pages, though - maybe?

Well if you do some quick math on that. 64MB - 16MB (video) - 16MB (WM5 & Apps) = 32MB which is about what you have after a hard reset.

I and I'm sure others would be happy to, but I don't have $170 to spare on such a thing at the moment.

No, the video memory is seperate from the main RAM. It's on the video chip, and not used for anything else.

Okay it's good to know that is separate. It was just hard to believe that with 64MB of ram that 32MB would be gone before you even get load anything up.

You would think that somebody out there has done this upgrade and posted their pros and/or cons by now. From what what I'm reading, nobody has done this, so it must not be all that advantagous for the $$. If it was THE UPGRADE OF THE CENTURY, everyone would be singing it's praises. I am not a power user by no means, but alot of you are, and have not tried this upgrade. So that tells me all I need to know.....it ain't worht it.
