IS there really a x51v with 320 mb??

thinking of upgrading to x51v is there really a Dell Axim X51v, Intel 624MHz, 320MB out there? if so what is the diff between that and the 256 mb?

Thanks

Actually I am pretty sure that PPC techs do do ram upgrades on the x51v. I have considered getting it since ram is somewhat limited on WM5.

Huh? I love you guys! I had to go find out for myself. From the pocket pc tech site

http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~se...064-128RAM.htm

" Upgrade your Dell Axim X51v series internal RAM from 64MB to 128MB with our upgrade service. During the upgrade process we remove the existing 64MB and install 128MB. This unit uses low voltage hi-speed BGA memory, so stacking is not available and 128MB will be the maximum capacity. "

So unless I'm all confused, (like--heh--that never happens), you have 256MB Flash, 64MB SDRAM for a total of 336MB memory with the x51v as it comes from the factory. With the tech's upgrade you get an additional 64MB SDRAM (400MB memory) or 128MB SDRAM + 256MB flash. However, its actually more than twice the SDRAM you had before because 64SDRAM only has 49.47MB that are useable.

How useful is 128MB SDRAM as opposed to 64MB SDRAM? Anyone care to speculate?

hmmm.

256 +64 (count on fingers) is 320MB factory not 336. (I'm not sure how Dell comes up with 336MB on their site).

The only use for the SDRAM is to run applications - large applications or multiple applications at the same time. The 256MB of flash ROM is for storage only - and those RAM upgrades of PPCTechs were way more useful with 2003SE and earlier because program and storage shared the same RAM space, with that slider you used to adjust how much executable space you had versus file storage. More RAM there meant that you had more space available to either run programs in, or to keep them in - with WM5, that's less of a consideration than it used to be.

Dell is probably also counting the 16 MB video memory.

The x51v uses a dedicated video card with 16 mb onboard memory (correct me if im wrong).

i think the performance difference would be pretty much negligible. can windows mobile 5 even make effecient use of more than 64MB? how many programs do you even NEED to run at the same time? are typical X51v slowdowns attributed to lack of available ram, or rather a lack of processing power?...

It would be pretty useful to me just because it makes it less necessary to manage the memory so closely. For instance, temp internet files can pile up to many mb in no time, plus any toolbars, today screen plugins, or whatever take up additional memory. Add that in with my habit of playing high quality mp3s in the background while I multitask between a couple of programs or maybe play a high powered game, and then memory becomes a huge issue. I personally think that at least 128mb of main memory is a must for dell's next pocket device. You'de think it would be no problem now that you can get 2gb on a 10 cubic milimeter transflash card.

But yeah memory makes a huge difference when you do alot with your axim.

Keep in mind more ram means more power usage.

my point is that windows media 5 isn't optmized for more than 64MB of RAM, and therefore wouldn't know how to make proper use of it. i don't think you'd notice a dramatic difference going from 64 to 128.
