Ok, my first post on Aximsite and it tells the tale of an idiot. Me sadly.
For all sorts of reasons that I cannot explain, my beloved X51v fell into a sink of water. It was fished out in seconds, the battery swiftly removed (switched off at the time which I guess was fortunate).
I stripped the Axim apart carefully and gently dried everything with a hairdryer, very careful not to touch sensitive parts and ensuring proper earthing to avoid static damage. The most obvious sign of trouble was water had ingressed into the display, I guess between the LCD and digitiser. About 30% of the screen, left side, was impacted. So I left the screen out on its own to dry. It took almost a day but did clear. I then assembled the Axim and to my delight it fired up perfectly first time. But, there was a problem with the screen. Areas at the bottom were very bright, as if on max brightness, with the remainder of the screen much dimmer but nonetheless uniform. As time went on, the very bright area slowly reduced, coming into line with the rest of the screen. What was clear is the bright area was probably the brightness it should be but was slowly matching a much dimmer screen. So, in all the screen is fine, but not as bright as it used to be before the accident. Beforehand, white areas were very bright indeed. Now ther are more of a faint grey.
The odd thing is, therefore, that the initially bright areas appeared to be what it should look like, but reduced. I can only assume there was still a very thin film of moisture that slowly evaporated and was making it look brigter than the rest of the screen.
So the only damage is the screen is no longer as bright as it used to be, but still perfectlym useable. Anyone any ideas what has been damaged? Is it the screen that has failed or electronics not providing the current to the screen that it should.
It was a strange thing to see that nice bright area slowly (and I mean slowly) disappear over a day leaving a much dimmer screen.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Sorry to hear that. If it's still under warranty, I wouldn't bother with trying to figure out what's wrong but call Dell for a replacement immediately. Any excuse is fine. Dell's CS is getting better everyday, especially with the slumping sales and exploding battery fiasco.

I don't think it's ethical to do that. Regular warranty does not cover accidents like this. If only the screen is damaged, you can replace it though PocketPCTech. http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~un...updateunit.htm

You're right. Just tell them the truth. You accidently dropped it in water and it doesn't work like before. The worst you'll get is a no. Then you can fix the screen through pocketpctech knowing you tried everything. You'll be surprise, Dell likes loyal customers and they'll replace it to make you happy.

If you've done that... then whatever warrenty you had, has now been voided. I know, it's a shame. So it looks like PPC techs are now the people to talk to.

i'm pretty sure it wouldn't after you've taken it apart, but it would have before it was opened... better read the small print which will settle it one way or the other

I did something similar to notebook computer -- it was sitting on the floor and I spilled a little beer on the screen. The effect was similar. At first I could see the liquid trapped between the screen layers but this dryed out leaving a slanted arear at the bottom of the screen that is slightly gray. I could buy a new TFT panel for it for about $125 but chose to just live with it.
