Same problem here after a reinstall from Sprite Backup.
I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest perhaps there's some config file for "boot" that gets written when you change the dimming time and the backup programs don't restore it with the correct permissions. Thus the setting program can't overwrite it and on next reboot it goes to default.
Wild and probably wrong guess since it should go into the registry and why wouldn't the dimming "off" similarly fail to hold?
Windows Mobile, much as I love it, really is a heap! Or maybe it's the Axims!
Recently I tried a full restore using spb backup (not related to this problem, just trying spb backup's functionality). After this restore, I start to have dimming config reset after suspend (previously I only have problem after full power off, which can be solved by the above mortscript fix). This annoys me quite a bit.
I then asked spb backup's support and they suggested trying to reset the registry value of "LockLevel" of "\HKCU\ConotrolPanel\Backlight\LockLevel" to 0.
This work for me so I have added one more line to the mortscript fix and placed it in the startup folder and it will run every power off/soft reset. Everything go back to normal.
However, this still couldn't touch the root of the problem that the config get reset after full power off. Incidentally I found that the LockLevel value also got reset to 1 after full power off. I have reported so to spb and will let you know if there's a further fix.
Hope this is useful to you and perhaps other registry gurus could also locate the root of this problem.
Since changing the LockLevel to 0 my setting has not changed even once. I have softreset by the button and by software and it seems to be holding. anyone else try it? before I changed it, it was set to 4.
I have the same problem. I am using X51v with A12. No password. I did not do any backup or restoration. I will try if bigdave240's registry tweak works.
Sadly, I had this exact same problem (have both SPB backup and Sprite installed)... I thought it was an isolated incidence until I accidently ran into this thread...

So does that means your problem has been fixed? Congratz.
For me, the LockLevel could not hold after full power off + button soft reset. So I still need to mortscript it and put it in the startup folder.
Guess the symptom is machine dependent or even "restore dependent". Different restore could give different symptoms.

This registry change seems to have worked for me too (knock on wood). Before change mine was set to 13.

I do not have the "LockLevel" in Control Panel\BackLight\etc... in the registry??
It is "LockLevel" entry under "\HKCU\ConotrolPanel\Backlight\LockLevel". That means you will see a LockLevel "folder" and under it another "LockLevel" entry.
\HKCU\ConotrolPanel\Backlight\LockLevel That is where I found the value of of LockLEvel set to 4 and I changed it to 0. Still holding. If I remember correctly I waited an hour or so before I did a soft reset but I am not positive.

1) there isn't a ConotrolPanel....ControlPanel yes.
2) there is no LockLevel folder in my x51v A12 ROM nor LockLevel entry (no folder in the first place).
