Isn't everything that isn't sd or cf on wm5 bis?

Yup, it is - in the meaning that all storage is in Flash ROM. However, it isn't assigned a separate drive path and hard resets also clean them, unlike in pre-WM5 OS'es.

This did happen to me on x50v with WM2003. BIS just disappeared one day along with all programs in BIS. Shortcuts to BIS couldn't find the .exe file.

Dell cross-shipped a new one 5 days before the warranty expired. So far I haven't found anyone using 2003 that had this happen.

It happens with 2003 sometimes. The hardreset-cancel trick fixes it most of the times.

No that's a separate problem.. something is broken
In WM5 The memory system is differnet. It just doesn't exist as a separate entity in wm5

WM2003 uses RAM as storage this is why you lose your data when the battery and backup battery both die and is why it is impossible to turn the PDA all the way off.

Under WM5 Microsoft moved the data storage to the ROM. The RAM is only used for temporary data that way the PDA can be turned all of the way off and if both batteries die you do not loose all of your data.

Any programs you are installing on your Axim to storage are going to the same memory that you used when you installed to BIS under WM2003.

Nope. Tried that about 10 times.

It's not just the data that disappeared, BIS itself was no longer in file explorer regardless of hard/soft reset or even a ROM flash. Something in the circuitry seems to have failed.

Different problem than the OP though. Mine seems to have been an isolated thing.
